watching CNN, they describe the toppling of Saddam Hussein's statues as 'symbols of oppression finally coming down' (they also showed the swastika being blown up in post WW2 Germany and saddam statue head being beaten with shoes) Now, america also has such symbols, flying proudly in the South, it's called Confederate Flag - the ultimate symbol of human slavery and suffering, not to mention number of political statues of those who supported it. Should we take those symbols down, burn them and piss on them? What's good for the goose.....

*tear down all Roman cities and monuments everywhere but in the city of Rome

*tear down all Greek colonial relics everywhere but in Athens, Sparta, and the other little former city states

*tear down the Great Pyramid

*tear down the Great Wall of China

* tear up all railroads heading to American West, due to exploitation of Chinese immigrants

*tear down half of London, since it was built with proceeds of colonialism, and, yes, early enough along, the slave trade

*tear down all of the mosques in Constantinople (not Istanbul any longer!), restore Hagia Sophia as Justinian had it, and let all the Greeks back in the city who want to come, since the Turks took it by military force and oppression

Will it make any difference if we get rid of symbols of oppression? I say we use the power of symbolism and show people the graphic stuff they don't want to see yet are responsible for- ie. The film "The Green Mile" is a postcard to people who support the death penalty yet don't want to see it happen.

The Nazi swastika is actually a reversal of the true swastika, or a swavastika. Instead of being a symbol (in Hindu and Chinese culture) of good fortune, the Nazi symbol is a symbol of chaos and destruction. Nihilism.
