There is a finite amount of earth and a finite amount of resources on it. Everybody understands that concept, whether they are willing to admit it or not.

"If not checked... many of our current practices may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner we know." -- The Union of Concerned Scientists, 1992 (comprised of roughly 15,000 scientists and over half the living Nobel laureates)

- Stratospheric ozone depletion threatens us with enhanced ultraviolet radiation at the earth's surface, which can be damaging or lethal to many life forms.
- There is a finite amount of ground water that humans will be able to consume before it becomes necessary to use either recycled water or pay the enormous sum necessary to put in place an infrastructure to purify seawater. The drinking of contaminated water would be one of, if not the most likely contributors to a global pandemic that could claim tens of millions of lives.

..To say nothing of air pollution, the depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, the collapse of fisheries due to dwindling fish populations and the dumping of toxic waste into their habitat, the destruction of our rainforests and the subsequent annihilation of the species living within them, and the irreversible loss of up to one-third of other species in less than 100 years.

As humans, self-preservation is an instinct we all possess, individually. It is unfortunate that as a collective, we appear unable to have the vision to look beyond the barrel of our own guns, if not even the next 10 years - for our sake, and the sake of future generations. We deserve the consequences of everything we permit to happen.

There's nothing I can do about it (so why worry?)
We will not run out of natural resources in the next 100 years
There's too much other stuff on our plate to worry about this now
It's not really going to affect me (so who cares?)
In the long term, this is the most important issue facing us as a species.
Chicken Little of the 21st Century
We need to handle our greed NOW!

COMMENTS:
I'm amazed at how many people will quibble about the estimated numbers rather than address the underlying issue.

And then there are those who seem to believe that resources are infinite, magically replenished by the Resource Fairy every night ...

Exactly - never the issue, just the manner in which it's being presented.

Wait, Cath, the Resource Fairy ISN'T real? GREAT! I just put "true" on my earth science final, which said that the Resource Fairy replenishes our natural resources.

You fool! Do you REALIZE what you've done?! ;D
