Yes, I feel very strongly that English should be the official language. Having different languages leads to isolationism amongst cultural groups. I've seen it first-hand where I live. I have Korean neighbors who might as well still be living in Korea. They don't even know how to say hello in English. They came over here to have a better lifestyle - surely they should try familiarize themselves with the American culture too?

Although by what means they could be 'forced' to learn English is a big question.

There is no 'official' language in the U.S.

They shouldn't be forced to speak English, but they should realize that if they want to do business in this country, like the rest of the world realizes, you won't get anywhere unless you know the English language. If you really want to be a success in the USA, learn to speak .
fluent bullshit (sorry it got cut off.)
Don't force them to learn English but all government forms and road signs should be in English. If you can't speak, read and write English then you can't be a citizen or drive a car. Businesses can choose whether or not to cater to Spanish speaking customers but I wouldn't. I remember working for Skechers and having to deal with Hispanic customers. First they would go to my brown skinned manager who was half Puerto-Rican, but he couldn't speak Spanish. They were usually surprised when he referred them to me; I have white skin (not even olive) and Asian eyes. I hated speaking Spanish to those idiots.
I don't like my tax dollars being spent on catering to people to who want to live where I live, but not adjust to the culture. Coming here for a better life, but trying to create a little Korea or little Mexico (just using the examples above) so they can feel at home is rediculous. It ticks me off.
If I moved to Germany I would expect to have to learn German and learn the German culture. I totally welcome anyone who wants to come here, but put some effort into it!
All of you excellent points. You either love America and try to learn the language and culture or you can just leave. It's that simple.
Mojo...I honestly did not know...
Of course, we'll have to administer a test to everyone in the country, regardless of whether they were born here or immigrated. There are people who were born and raised in this country who sounds as though they just popped in from alpha Centauri. And most of them are the people screaming "English for America!"
Make the President speak English first.
i would like to say that they should at least learn a little enough to have a coherent conversation with an english speaking person. and before someone calls me a redneck white power bastard i would like to say that my mother is a direct immigrant from El Salvador and knew no english when she came and is now an english speaking well rounded member of society
