ARTIFICIAL BLACK HOLES BY 2010

[+] ballot by xaman
created Tue Jan 04, 05

According to Scientific American and other reliable sources, Scientist are expecting to produce (micro) black holes by 2010 using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which is scheduled to start working by 2007. If successful, this experiment would provide for the first time evidence for the ultimate theory that would unify the Standard Model of Particles (i.e. quantum physics) with General Relativity (i.e. gravitation). Now the problem is:

If the standard model is correct, there would be no black hole at all.

If S. Hawkings is correct the produced micro black holes would be very
unstable exploding within a tiny fraction of a second, but...

If A. Einstein is right, the black hole will be STABLE and then it would settle at the center of the earth and start accreting material (very slowly at first), but nevertheless devouring it.

So, what do you think?

Einstein is correct, we must stop this experiment
Einstein is correct, but we should let it happen anyway!!!
Einstein is wrong, we have nothing to fear.
Unless we *know* Hawkings is correct, stop it
Do it, with BH speed greater than escape velocity
Einstein is correct, but it's destined to happen
String Theory is wrong: There will be no hole!!

COMMENTS:
You know ... the mere fact that this is in question causes me to question the wisdom of performing the experiment on earth.

we should throw delinquents down it
by Preparation_H on Tue Jan 04, 05 11:01am [+]

Hmmm I don't know about the answer but the question itself makes me want a drink...
by Tadema on Tue Jan 04, 05 11:06am [+]

Great, I can't wait until Israel, China and Pakistan get ahold of this technology. Can't they find a cure for cancer or something?
by _Beelzebubba on Tue Jan 04, 05 11:08am [+]

Cathexis: Actually, physicist are very confident that it would NOT produce a stable black hole... but who knows? The fact is that we have never been able to test nature at this scale... I mean, we will never know for sure the outcome of this experiment until we actually do it.

Cheers Tads..
by Bafkoof on Tue Jan 04, 05 11:27am [+]

And Hawkings' theories are up to now very speculative in the sense that none of his predicctions have been verified experimentally yet.

Cheers Tads, Bafkoof!

Cheers boys!
by Tadema on Tue Jan 04, 05 11:48am [+]

The theorists should think this over VERY WELL before giving the go ahead.
by thc2883 on Tue Jan 04, 05 12:21pm [+]

These dudes sound like they couldn't manage to even get a date with a girl, let alone make a working black hole.
by _Beelzebubba on Tue Jan 04, 05 1:22pm [+]

hmm, well lets just hope that Hawkings is correct or the scientists cant create one.
by ABC on Tue Jan 04, 05 2:58pm [+]

Ok, thc2883 is physicist, so NOW I am scared!!

Well _Beelzebubba, you know, those guys were smart enough as to get funds for 2.9 Billion euros for this proyect.

ABC: You know what? It's interesting how you and Cathexis feel more confortable saying "Hawkings is correct" instead of "Einstein is wrong" haha! The later certainly sounds like a heresy, doesn't it?
by xaman on Tue Jan 04, 05 5:08pm [+]

Einstein, for all his talent in the field, didn't have nearly all the right answers. But I'm suspect of Hawking's thinking, always have been.
by Truthseeker013 on Tue Jan 04, 05 5:50pm [+]

Trutseeker013: You are not alone with your feelings about Hawkings, I know several physicists that share that feeling. He does hold the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge, though.
by xaman on Tue Jan 04, 05 10:47pm [+]

Hawking is a REALLY smart guy but even the smartest humans that ever lived could barely hope to understand the complexities of our universe.
by thc2883 on Wed Jan 05, 05 5:47am [+]

Of course he is thc.

Wow! Someone actually voted for the second choice!
by xaman on Wed Jan 05, 05 11:40am [+]

`Einstein was not a handsome fellow,
i bet nobody ever called him al.
He had a long moustach to pull on, it was yellow,
I dont beleive he ever had a gal!`

As for hawkins if hes so smart why cant he get his voice synthesiser to sound more realistic than an autistic vibrator?

Hopefully theyll manage to prove ALL the laws of physics wrong and I for one will be most impressed!
by xxxxxxxx on Mon Jan 10, 05 12:42am [+]

Many years ago I read of an old prediction (Mayan I think) that this world, as in this existance/reality, would end on December 24, 2011. (apparently Mayans were into the calendar big time). Maybe this is it. Though there could be any number of things that bring it about -- the effects of global warming, an uncontrollable virus that devours everything else living, GW's drive for Armeggedon..........
I know it's superstitious, but I'll sleep better after waking on Christmas 2011!
and now you've given me another possibility to consider!
