ARE HUMANS EVOLVING OR DEVOLVING?

[+] ballot by Jigsaw
created Tue Jan 04, 05

On one side of the arguement, humans have developed a massive brain that has enabled us to develop all tools from the spear to the computer to the spacecraft. We are also the only organism that we know of with very complex language skills. Yet we no longer have the strength to easily climb trees. Our fingers on our feet have devolved into useless digits because we haven't used them for millions of years. We can't run very fast, and if we could we couldn't catch most prey because we have no hunting skills without tools. Our senses of smell, hearing and sight are no match for most other mammals. And our canine teeth have shrunken to the point where they're useless for ripping apart prey. It seems as though we're turning into very smart lazy blobs.

We're evolving
We're devolving
A little of both
God created us silly, we didn't evolve
1% is evolving. 99% are degenerating.
We're revolving at about 1800 mph
irrelevant, concerning civilisation's progress

In 500,000 years, we'll probably look like pinkies.

It's true that human compassion has allowed the weak to survive and reproduce.

I know, I saw on the news tonight about how few animals were killed by the tsuami
scientist say it it not so much Six Sense , but common sense

Yeah, animals don't need to worry about not attracting tourists.
by Dani_dysfunk on Tue Jan 04, 05 8:31pm [+]

Evolution tends to make animals more competitive. If certain characteristics are no longer needed, they may be breeded out. We can't run fast but we can run long distances better than the vast majority of animals out there. Our feet are now adapted to walking and running, so that our hands can be used for other tasks, like holding a spear. Our canines were never really for ripping apart prey.

Well, maybe a small percentage of the population can run long distances. Most people aren't in good enough shape.
by Jigsaw on Wed Jan 05, 05 7:51am [+]

Yes it could be considered evolving.

I second what _Beelzebubba said -- I vehemently disagree with your sociopolitical views, Gags, but that doesn't matter, because you're funnier than hell.

In light of magdalenasdollar second comment, which is true and can only indicate that our interference with nature is bringing about a slow devolution to the human race.
As unfair as it may sound, but only the strong, fit healthy people should reproduce and then we come to the argument that a master race of superior human beings is being created and it is evil and unfair to the weak, sick and deformed.
But what are we to become?
Are we to become sickly, hideous deformed mutants because of that human compassion?
or
Are we going to let our survival instincts rule and strive for self improvement?

i believe knowledge is there for those that are interested in aquiring it. since most of us seek instant gratification and physical pleasure instead of seeking this knowledge, the decendants of those who seek and acquire this knowledge will rule the decendants of those that sought mere pleasure and instant gratification.

Advances in genetic modification, electronics, computing, physics, materials and hundreds of other incredibly complex and advanced fields of science are visible on a yearly basis.

The technological difference between 10 and 20 years ago isn't that much. Someone from 1985 transported to 1995 wouldn't find the mobile phones and computers there to be that amazing. Transport someone from 1995 to today with our colour screened mobiles and massive internet and hundreds of other chan ges and they would be quite suprised.

Chances are if we were transported 10 years into the future we would be awed.

If the trend continues.
