ARE YOU ON THE PROPERTY LADDER?

[+] ballot by xxxxxxxx
created Wed Jan 12, 05

House prices and mortgage qualification criteria ( particularly in Britain ) are at horrendously high levels, many people having very little chance of ever getting their foot ton the property ladder at all.

Have you managed to do it yet, and how old are you?

yes
no
I have no hope
I have realistic plans to soon

Its easy to buy a house in Alberta as no downpayment is required and morgages are nonqualifying & transferable

Thats why I bought a cottage...get the hell away from everything...plus it had tripled in value in the last 10 years..

A cottage is still on the prperty ladder though, its starting to appear as if this problem is exclusive to Britain, is this the case?

'Ladder' is an interesting analogy. Here in the South East of England, it would be a very tall ladder that happens to be missing the bottom 16 rungs.

I was able to buy my home by myself in 1997 - but I had to move from expensive Los Angeles to Las Vegas to be able to. Now the prices have gone up so much that I don't think I could do it now. My house has more than doubled in value. Another plus for me though is that I'm a US veteran, so a special mortgage is available to me that makes it a lot easier.

I do not intend to buy a house in the near future unless I become extremely rich and can afford to buy a large house with a housekeeping staff. I dislike loans, so I doubt that I would ever try to take out a large mortgage to buy a house I don't want to take care of.

Yes, but I didn't get my first house until I was almost 40.

house prices are ridiculous here, since my parents brought our house 15 years ago the price has gone up almost 250%
