Not more independent forms of non-left thought, like paleoconservatism, libertarianism and centrism. For many on the Right, I see some pathological behavior and attitudes. Subservience to a leader or dominant idea, whether it's religious or ideological. A sense that the nation is divinely inspired, and symbols like flags and patriotic songs are sacred and deserve veneration. Dissent is to be considered sedition or even treason, and foreign states that oppose the nation's policies are treated as enemies. And the use of stereotyped words like "terrorist" and cliches like "if you're not for us, you're against us", "God bless America", "one nation under God", and such. The most extreme cases include Nazi Germany and Napoleon's France. Is this a sign of insanity, or just patriotic excess? (This should not be taken to mean that liberalism or other forms of political thought could never be expressions of insanity.) Yes, it's insanity. No, genuine patriotism.
