Well, I have been known to flex my mental muscles (all four of them!) in public, and I'm a fairly humble man, so I'd equate the need to "strut one's stuff" with the human need to feel superior in some way.

Perhaps, for some, it is the feeling instilled from birth that we are the center of our parent's universe, therefore, we feel we ARE the center of the universe for everyone in some ways. "I'm special". :)
