GENETICALLY MODIFIED SMALLPOX

[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
created Mon Jan 24, 05

Senior scientific advisers to the World Health Organisation (WHO) have recommended the creation of a genetically modified version of the smallpox virus to counter any threat of a bio-terrorist attack.

Permitting researchers to engineer the genes of one of the most dangerous infections known to man would make it easier to develop new drugs against smallpox, the scientists said. But the man who led the successful global vaccination campaign to eradicate smallpox from the wild said he opposed the move on the grounds that the scientific benefits were not worth the risks to public health.

Do you believe smallpox should be genetically modified, for such purposes?

And if the idiots DO decide to do it anyway, give me three hours warning, and warn Canada that it'll be a crash landing.

Seriously, as badly as they mucked up the vaccines for our soldiers, I wouldn't trust a team of Government scientists to tell me if it were smowing at the South Pole. These guys are hired more for their political connections than actual skill and knowledge. If it sounds like paranoia, let it. but I have tried to get Government grants for science research, back in my university days. I lost out to a guy who had the man in charge of disbursements on speed-dial...

I don't know what to think about this. It worries me that we are not still protected against this virus but I am afraid to think about them "creating" something even worse.

Four years ago, scientists in Australia genetically modified a mousepox virus and inadvertently created a highly virulent strain that could not be stopped by vaccination.
