COMMENTS:
Fascism already seems ascendent; I daresay that both would enjoy comebacks.

Fascism, I could see ascending again, but not communism. Not to contradict Cathexis, a far more learned man than I'll ever be, but the history of communism is still in the public zeitgeist (the downfall of the Soviet Union, the state of affairs in Cuba), and no one with sense would want to hearken back to those days. But I do forget that sheeple are easily led to the slaughter.

Truth: I can see your reasoning on that and struggled with it a bit, myself. But I was looking more at smaller countries and the South-/ Central-American ones.

For impoverished nations of this type, I could see a Communist style/ leaning approach to be attractive ... as it might be for any smaller country who believes it has suffered Imperialistic oppressions.

Imagine a boot stomping on a human face for the rest of eternity..

If the world fell into a depression then it is entirely possible the democrats would retake the whitehouse, so yes.

o.k. here's the view from the high-tech marvel of "Spanky-vision"..the elections in Iraq are denounced by everybody (both inside and out of Iraq) as fraudulent. further polarization of the Iraqis against America..increase of insurgent attacks..the puppet govt. announces Draconian "Security" measures.. Martial law declared/6P.M. curfew, oil production goes to zero. Oil prices skyrocket..Iran overtly intercedes in Baghdad..installation of Islamic govt. absolute chaos..pre-existing mass graves are open for business again..and that's just in the next six months!
by spanky on Mon Jan 24, 05 7:33pm [+]

spanky: I agree with the first half to 2/3rds of your assessment.

As far as Iran overtly going in, etc. ... I think that is paranoic projection.
by Cathexis on Tue Jan 25, 05 9:00am [+]

Probably.

And last time the democrats got in power during a depression they swung the whole nation way to the left, as near to socialism as we have come so far. Some of those 'reforms' were dismantled, but most weren't. Which means that last time they permanetly moved us towards socialism. If a democrat gets in again during a depression it wouldn't be too difficult to swing us something resembling communism. This would be a bad thing.
by herzog on Tue Jan 25, 05 2:04pm [+]

How can Communism be bad??..from each according to their abilities, to each according to their need..this is a bad thing?
