COMMENTS:
That would be good, and they'll look after the human rights issue, Freedom_Fries told me that Portugal was a dictatorship untli 1975, but with their entrance into the EU, they improved upon human rights.

Fuck the corrupt EU. Thank God that Britain will be voting not to adopt the constitution soon. The EU is just another step to bigger, more unaccountable government.

Yeah, like aya said.
EU membership has served the purpose of securing democracy in Portugal and Spain, in the 80s. We were in the process of consolidating new-born democracies.
But respect of human rights is connected has much to culture as it is to political will.
Ukraine will be accepted if they comply with the criteria, like anybody else, and if no country exercises its veto right (right now there's no reason to believe any would).
Of course no one believes that EU membership takes care of any problems by itself, but...
The same could be said for Turkey, Romania, etc.

Ukraine will be part of Eu, i have no doubt about that. However there are still great changes to be made there, like a more effective control over the mafias, defict stabilization, etc. It will also be a way to contribute to political stability. By the way, when Portugal joined the EEC democracy was not at risk there. They did it maily because they were in dire financial straits..
