WOULD THE WORLD BE HAPPY WITH A TOTALLY ISOLATIONIST AMERICA?

[+] serious ballot by herzog
created Tue Jan 25, 05

Would most non-americans be happy with a world where american foriegn policy was entirely isolationist? We'd withrdraw from the UN, no more dues, no more troops, no more UN buildings in New York. We'd withdraw from all international treaties, NATO, NAFTA, etc. We'd withdraw from all international organizations, the WHO, the world bank, etc. We'd bring every single american soldier home, no troops and no bases on foreign soil. We deny all requests and end all current programs of international aid, in any form, money, food, military intervention, etc.

And that's it. We'd lift all trade embargos and trade with anyone, we'd mind our own business, neither aiding nor harming any other nation. Would that make the rest of the world happy?

*note this is intended for non-americans. Americans can respond by try to comment from the perspective of a foriegner.

yes, the rest of the world would be happy with the situation you described
no, that is not a desirable outcome
NO! oil prices would be intolerable

COMMENTS:
no, I don't think so, I've talked to a couple of people who grew up in other countries & they say the world sees us as a really wealthy country , they think we are all Bill Gates I guess, also alot of countries owe America money & if you've ever loaned money to someone that can't pay you back then you know how the resent you after that, I really think it's money for the most part.

I had this discussion with my best friend a few weeks ago, and we both were reminded of this analogy. I think I've mentioned it here before, but here goes anyway.

I'm an avid comics fan, and ones of my favorites for years was the Avengers. One of the best issues, in my opinion, was one where the group was catching hell on all sides for "interfering in the affairs of the world". So Captain AMerica called a meeting of all the Avengers, auxilliaries included, and explained the matter to them before giving them his resolution to the affair. He ordered all Avengers to go home and take the day off. Take off your super-jammies, put on street clothes and live a day as a normal person. And, no matter what evils or horrors may spring to life before them, DO NOTHING. Let the authorities handle their own messes.

Well, the next day, aliens invaded the planet. Of course, without the Avengers, the aliens owned the place in minutes. When the UN came crying for them to save the day, Cap replied, "But we MUST'NT INTERFERE. It's NOT OUR PROBLEM." Let's try that for a day, and see how long it takes for the world to come begging for us to save them. They may scream that they hate us and our policies, as they have a right to (and, given the present climate, I can more than understand), but it still doesn't stop them from wanting us to help out at every turn.

It would make no difference to me or Canada.

As far as what everygirl said about other countries owing the US, well actually the US owes more than it is owed.

True or not , we don't live in a culture that teaches us to hate those that have more, did I just say that? O.k. maybe we do but most of us don't fall for the poor me idea's , not to say that we aren't better off than others I think we do live higher than alot of other countries but I also think our forefathers earned that right

With the amount of world GNP that the US currently has, its impossible for them to become isolationist, their military is there to protect its interests and the aid is mainly to insure that the products needed from those countries is recieved.

I personally wouldnt like the US to become completely isolationist, as I believe the true majority of US citizens are more or less cool people who want to be a part of the global village.

The trouble is, it is the jingoistic, red neck, extremists, that tend to shout the loudest and so they tend to drown out the sensible voice of America.

It wouldnt bother most but would others, but the losers in this would be the US itself, as world oil production wouldnt be traded in Dollars eventually which would badly hurt the US economy since it wouldnt be able to manipulate its own currency so that he gets stable oil prices were as eveyone else suffers.

Seems to be mainly the Americans that think everyone else wants them to stick around...

I'm not sure about happy, but they might be distinctly unbombed.
by cretin_slap on Wed Jan 26, 05 5:52am [+]

WRONG. The world would not be happy. Instead of the world hating us, the world would hate eachother, and then hate will turn into war, and millions of millions of people will be killed.
