COMMENTS:
it is legal because if it became illigal it would create the same problem prohibition did. Smokers pay way more taxed than non smokers. If a smoker is cut odd healthcare than so should overeaters and alcoholics and lazy people.

Well said ABC.
over eatters are not banned from eating in public buildings and sitting next to them in a restaurant does not cause you to become obese as well

We are based (or used to be based)on the concept of free enterprise. I can make and try to sell whatever I want. The question is why do people still buy them?
Or look at Coca-Cola. The harmful ingredient was removed (damn!). The restriction should be not to allow nicotine to be sold over the counter. Then they could still make cigarettes, but no one would buy them.
They would have to buy them from pushers instead, like those who enjoy the ingredient that was removed from Coca-Cola.
your right NB, if they really wanted to end smoking they would make them slowly reduce the nicotine. ut I think they like the huge tax revenues and the kick backs from the tabacoo companies.

In the UK, the average cost of a pack of fags is around £4.50. Given that almost 80% of that is tax, its not in the best interest of the govenment to do anything about it. They only made it law to put health warnings on packs to appease public concerns.
yeah, but does the extra tax revenue out weigh he cost for medical treatment smokers occur? especially in uk where they have a national health system
But if the government is spending so much on health care then it's not as worth it. And as far as smokers paying more taxes than non-smokers, it's totally by their choice.
Hey, Larry - we had a simultaneous commentasm.
^Now I need a cigarette - lol
cool Hb
HB I guess the revenue side of it is just the tip of the iceberg, there's the knock on effect of employee's in the tabaco industry, shops etc, all becoming unemployed and claiming from the state. I hostestly believe that is why they have not been banned.
and the doctors, nurses, technician and so on, needed to care for victims of tobaco
oh, and the funeral directors too
Yea, their current strategy is pretty hilarious. It's basically: "Keep cigarettes out of the hands of children, and in the hands of adults, where they belong." Of course, you could say the same thing about alcohol, especially hard alcohol. That may not be *quite as hazardous to your health as cigarettes, but being intoxicated places other people at risk whenever you get into a car or become belligerent. (To say nothing of alcoholism in general)
