WHY DO THEY SELL CIGARETTES?

[+] ballot by larrynelmira
created Tue Jan 25, 05

The major cigarette companies have an ad campaign of the horrors of smoking, I know this was part of a settlement agreement, but could you imagine GM telling people not to drive their cars because you will die if you do?

The money smokers cost taxpayers each year through medicare and medicaid could fund a national health plan of some sort?

So why are they selling a product that the makers admit themselves will kill or seriously harm your health?

Also, should smokers be cut off medicare and medicaid if they do not quit?

don't know
population control/they want us to kill ourselves
It would a new crime problem
Free enterprise
Because they're a HEALTH PRODUCT !

COMMENTS:
it is legal because if it became illigal it would create the same problem prohibition did. Smokers pay way more taxed than non smokers. If a smoker is cut odd healthcare than so should overeaters and alcoholics and lazy people.

over eatters are not banned from eating in public buildings and sitting next to them in a restaurant does not cause you to become obese as well
by larrynelmira on Tue Jan 25, 05 4:45pm [+]

true, but it is just as deadly
by ABC on Tue Jan 25, 05 4:50pm [+]

I am not defending smoking, but I am defending ones right to do so.

We are based (or used to be based)on the concept of free enterprise. I can make and try to sell whatever I want.

The question is why do people still buy them?
by HBinVegas on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:20pm [+]

Or look at Coca-Cola. The harmful ingredient was removed (damn!). The restriction should be not to allow nicotine to be sold over the counter. Then they could still make cigarettes, but no one would buy them.
by HBinVegas on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:23pm [+]

They would have to buy them from pushers instead, like those who enjoy the ingredient that was removed from Coca-Cola.
by HBinVegas on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:24pm [+]

your right NB, if they really wanted to end smoking they would make them slowly reduce the nicotine. ut I think they like the huge tax revenues and the kick backs from the tabacoo companies.
by ABC on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:26pm [+]

In the UK, the average cost of a pack of fags is around £4.50. Given that almost 80% of that is tax, its not in the best interest of the govenment to do anything about it. They only made it law to put health warnings on packs to appease public concerns.
by minni_the_minx on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:35pm [+]

yeah, but does the extra tax revenue out weigh he cost for medical treatment smokers occur? especially in uk where they have a national health system
by larrynelmira on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:40pm [+]

But if the government is spending so much on health care then it's not as worth it. And as far as smokers paying more taxes than non-smokers, it's totally by their choice.
by HBinVegas on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:40pm [+]

Hey, Larry - we had a simultaneous commentasm.

by HBinVegas on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:42pm [+]

cool Hb
by larrynelmira on Tue Jan 25, 05 5:58pm [+]

HB I guess the revenue side of it is just the tip of the iceberg, there's the knock on effect of employee's in the tabaco industry, shops etc, all becoming unemployed and claiming from the state. I hostestly believe that is why they have not been banned.
by minni_the_minx on Tue Jan 25, 05 6:27pm [+]

and the doctors, nurses, technician and so on, needed to care for victims of tobaco
by larrynelmira on Tue Jan 25, 05 6:58pm [+]

oh, and the funeral directors too
by larrynelmira on Tue Jan 25, 05 6:58pm [+]

Yea, their current strategy is pretty hilarious. It's basically: "Keep cigarettes out of the hands of children, and in the hands of adults, where they belong."

Of course, you could say the same thing about alcohol, especially hard alcohol. That may not be *quite as hazardous to your health as cigarettes, but being intoxicated places other people at risk whenever you get into a car or become belligerent. (To say nothing of alcoholism in general)
