SCHOOL UNIFORMS/DRESS CODE - YES OR NO?

[+] serious ballot by HBinVegas
created Tue Jan 25, 05

There's quite a hoopla in Las Vegas about what kids should wear to public schools. They had a dress code, but it got dropped in November after a girl sued the school district for restricting her freedom of speech. She had ignored the dress code and worn shirts with religious messages on them. The district now polled the parents and reinstated the dress code for schools where 55% or more of the parents approved of the dress code. It is not a uniform, the kids just have to wear blue or khaki pants, and a white, blue or red shirt with no writing or symbols on them.

I kind of like the dress code idea, but my daughter is full out against it. What do you think?

No restriction
Dress code is good
Full out uniform
Dress Codes are evil!

COMMENTS:
I would support it, it saves hassle in the morning and doesnt separate the rich from the poor.

I would be willing to wear a uniform

I think that's why I'm for it, I grew up poor and the other girls had the coolest outfits. Now as a parent, I think of the morning hassles it saves *what do I wear*

Many kids don't know how to dress for school. They know how to dress for parties and for dates and for dance clubs, but they don't know how to dress for school. Most schools don't have dress codes hoping that the students will have enough common sense to wear appropriate attire. But too many students these days have abused their priviledge and have to be reigned in. Too bad kids (those of you with newly imposed dress codes). You blew it.

Childhood schooling is a good time to stand out from the crowd and young people like to do it through their clothing. I believe it's more for the students to decide and believe they would be heartily opposed to dress restrictions.

I dont see the big fuss that kids have about wearing a uniform, its training for life, there are many professions and jobs that require jobs, and many jobs, require a dress code, better to put that to practice from now. Also uniforms make everyone equal, nobody is better than anyone else, kids can show their individuality in many other ways other than clothes. School is about more than just academic work.

jobs that require a uniform...sorry

I wore a school uniform and my son does too. It saves them from having to have the "cool" outfits and it's so easy to dress them in the morning. I understand wanting to be an individual but maybe with uniforms it will push the student to stand out with himself rather than the clothes he can or can't afford.

We've had a dress code for a few years now - There is some room for individuality, and it does make it easier for everyone. At the time when they made the change, there was a bit of an uproar, but now it's just not a big deal. I kinda like it.

I think there are 2 issues with having no dress code. 1) Offensive
dress which can be remedied without uniformity. 2) Divisions
based on appearance, clothing and such.
In either case I believe forcing children to wear uniforms is sheltering them from some of lifes more cruel realities that they should learn to get past before they are unleashed on the world.

I support it - everyone's comments are excellent. I had to wear uniforms throughout my school days. I never had to worry about my wardrobe, which freed up my mind for studying. Having to think about what to wear is stultifying for me - even now!

nope, you see rival schools go round attacking kids from other rival schools in my area and the only way they an identify them is with uniform. two kids from my school got beaten up by about 40 kids from an enemy school once, that whole incident could have been avoided if it were not for the uniform
by Preparation_H on Wed Jan 26, 05 2:32pm [+]

Anyone who says they're against a dress code is too young to remember the rash of shootings and murders nationwide by kids who were after other kids' Air Jordans or expensive clothes. If there are those who want to express their religious freedoms, there's a place for that. It's called a church.
by Truthseeker013 on Wed Jan 26, 05 5:53pm [+]

A lot of great comments here. As I said, I like the dress code, and kids are free to express themselves with their shoes, socks, hair and accessories. And this dress code applies to all schools in the district, so you can't tell one school uniform from the other.

we have had only good experience with a strong dress code or a school uniform of docker type pants and polo shirts, blue or black skirts. it cuts down on the suggestive clothing and punk hood type clothes. also the competition on brand names. it is also much more affordable.
