I think people are going to eventually tire of the two parties and there will be a need for a new structure. Neither party fully represents my views and I'm sure it's that way for many others.
I don't know if things will improve, buit I believe they can, if: * Political parties start valuing moderates and stop playing to extremist bases * We change an electoral system and mindset from "winner take all," to something that provides an actual "representative government." * We get the Big Money out of politics. * Citizens start evaluating and analyzing issues instead of falling for labels and spin, as if they were supporting a sports team
winning ... not representing. Perhaps ditching this two-party system and the bicameral house for something more representative, like a parlimentary system.
Oops ... truncated my post. Should have started with: Tads makes an excellent point. Political parties in the US have become self-sustaining entities, concerned with ...
Currently, we seem to believe that if one group can get a majority, no matter by how razor-thin a margin, that they have carte blanche to advanc etheir agenda and everyone else can like it or lump it. We need a system where everyone gets represented ... including groups that don't win a majority.
Yes proportional representation might be an idea. The two party system does seem flawed in this day and age. Life is never that simple, never black and white, or blue and red. More shades thereof.

Wow..I said all that? Groovy!
As long as Paul keeps robbing Peter, we're screwed.
most americans are not political, most have no clue what right wing or left wing means, people who come into sites like this are the exception, most americans do not feel divided. I also know many who voted for bush and those who voted for kerry, and they are friends, do not threaten civil war, I think talk of divided america is much to do about nothing
that last entry was me, don't know why that happened
