Private health insurance is only in force if you pay your premiums. They can cut you off *immediately* if your payment is late. So if you don't work, even because you are too sick, they can cancel your coverage. There is another type of policy called disability coverage, which guarantees you an income (to vary based on how much you pay for) should you become to sick to work. With this coverage, you should be able to continue to pay your health insurance premiums.

cool, thanks HB, and who was that comment directed at Steel?

In the U.S. - if you are trying to get insurance, you can be either denied or charged up the wazoo if you have a 'pre-existing condition'.

If your disease requires any kind of experimental or innovative treatment, you are not covered. If your disease is rare, and the drugs are hard to come by (e.g., they need to be 'compounded' in a lab), it is almost impossible to get coverage.

I am speaking from personal experience, friends' experiences, and research I've done on this subject (through media sources and MDs).

Sorry I didn't answer the question directly. I have a good friend who was cut off for not paying her premiums. Thanks for that info, HB.

ABC: The commentwas a flippant remark at larry

Mojo: This is one of the many reasons I am a so called 'liberal'. If you opened your front door and saw someone in need, be it for lack of food, warmth or medical assistance, would you not try and help them?

If your neighbour asked you to help them over bad times, would you refuse them?

These are the tenets of my moral compass, which is why I am an unabashed socialist.

I tend to see the world as my neighbour and try in a small way wo make peoples lives a little easier, be it with a few medicines or a blanket.

Im sure no compassionate person would disagree with these basic beliefs, but believe it or not, there are those who advocate the 'dog eat dog' 'look after number one' 'Im alright Jack' philosophy.

Its the myopia of these people I argue against.

I really believe that healthcare should be paid for from the public purse, if its possible to fund an illegal war and buy ever more weapons, surely its not beyond the scope of reason that this could be achieved?
by Steelhamster on Thu Feb 10, 05 4:38pm [+]

Yes, it is only in efefct as long as you pay premiums.

Thus, ironiocally, if you ever get too sick to work, you'll likely end up defaulting on healthacre payments and losing benefits.
