The federal government? The federal government doesn't even play a role in the economy, unless you think health care automatically makes you solialist, which it doesn't. The provinces play a role in that and it depends entirely on where you live. For example, in Saskatchewan the phones and utilities are owned and regulated by the gov't, and they do a very good job of keeping the prices low. Next door in Alberta, just about everything is privately owned. You can't paint the entire country with the same stick, it doesn't work like that. And if you want to talk about going broke, take a look at the sagging US dollar.
I always enjoy going to Canada and the people are for the most part better behaved than Americans. The strip clubs are way better too.
I think the feelings are mutual! Canada being above us, has gave the Canadians the excuse of shitting on us. Most Americans would love nothing more than to show their appreciation of being shit on, by shoving a moose up their asses.

Canada isn't going broke. Most advanced 1st world nations are a mix of socialism and capitalism, even the USA, look at farm subsidies. It's a highly advanced 1st world nation. The US isn't going broke either. Far from it. Jigsaw, the weak American Dollar is partially deliberate. The US has a trade inbalance and it makes it's exports far less expensive than say the EU. The Canadian Dollar has traditionally been weak because Canada is an export driven economy and it makes it's exports affordable. It also has spent a kings ransom on an elaborate social welfare system while for decades ignoring it's military and national defense. Canada's leaders construed, correctly, that the US was never going to harm it and would protect it from outside adversries. Canada has it's cake and eats it to. Lucky dogs.

I used to think getting rid of the Queen was a good idea but then I put some thought into it and asked myself why should it be changed. The system we have in place right now works perfectly fine the way it is, and the British monarchy is a part of out heritage. You don't stomp on your heritage. I say keep the system the way it is unless there's a need for change.

Most Canadians aren't of anglo saxon ancestery jigsaw. Most don't trace their ancestery to the British Isles. And if you included the Irish (like your PM Paul Martin) you have an overwhelming majority with no particular heritage connection to the British Monarchy.
National heritage, not blood heritage. And when the country was formed, yes, the majority of the population was anglo-saxon.
It's fucking disgusting, excuse my french, that millions and millions of Canadians of Irish descent, who were forced to immigrate to Canada, America, Australia, etc., because of sadistic oppression, would tolerate in the 21st century living under something as humiliating and archaic as a hereditary monarchy. Personally I say ditch the monarchy. It has absolutely no cultural or political value attached to it, and the transition to a republic would be so easy IMO.
All is needed is for the Governor General to be replaced by a President. Same function, same powers.

jigsaw left bad K 14 (!) of my ballot comments. On 11 his reason was ":". Sparse, care to elaborate? Most had nothing to do specifically with jigsaw. No, I'm not delusional, jigsaw has obviously gone to my user page many times. My comments about jigsaw are called satire.Very common in my country. Maybe it's been banned in Canada. It could hurt someones feelings and lower their self esteem.
exarmydude, that's how the karma system works. A reason is only displayed if the user types in their own reason, otherwise they pick from a drop down box of reasons that aren't displayed on the user page after they are posted. I felt the bad karma was appropriate for the comments you were leaving.
