WHY ARE SO MANY DEMOCRATS AFRAID OF BEING LABELED A LIBERAL?

During the presidential debates George W. Bush tried to label John Kerry as a liberal. Which he is and there is absolutely no shame in that, but he didn’t embrace this idea publicly and it seems a bit awkward. Like he has something to hide. What is wrong with being a liberal? Abolition was a liberal idea that was one of the founding tenets of the Republican party, but rather than acknowledge this the republicans are trying to make people afraid of change or at least the changes the democrats would like to institute. Marijuana legalization is a liberal idea and many republicans support it as well as many democrats but no one acknowledges this either. The fact is liberal does not have any party affiliation and no talk radio DJ can claim otherwise. Here are 2 definitions of the word liberal from dictionary.com -> liberal - lib·er·al adj. 1. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry. 2. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

Only a fascist would stand against this type of thinking. What do you think? Why are so many Democrats afraid of being labeled a liberal?

I don't know
because of the misconception that a word can be EVIL
Because they are spineless, unfortunately
Due to a multi-decade smear campaign demonizing it

COMMENTS:
Simple, those on the right have twisted its meaning so those who support the right now equate 'liberal' with Commie Gay Child Molester.

Most conservative voters and supporters rarely think for themselves and leave it to their political masters to tell them what is and isnt true.

Liberals tend to be better educated and more informed ofthe facts or will actively seek out the facts.

The term liberal has expanded in its meaning. It was a relatively simple term back when liberals fought for liberty but in the states than name has been hijacked by radicals, marxists, progressives, etc. Liberal is now associated with all the negative qualities of leftists.

Like the man said, a near-perfect smear job.

I think its a two fold reason. One, the ultra liberals (what some would call rabid liberals) went too far. Americans are more center and really not one extreme or the other. Some liberals who gain press have wild conspiracy theories that wig the people out (the ultra conservatives do too, like calling the Clintons "witches."). The other reason is that the ultra conservatives have been successful in painting liberals as un-American, even though it is not true. They timed this well and since many rabid liberals have said some wild things, the message the ultra conservatives tried to send resonated with the people. I also think that having people like Barbara Streisand being associated with liberalism hurt too. Just my opinion though.

The classic definition of liberal has nothing to do with liberals of today, just as conservative is a misnomer.

If liberals actually were liberal they'd be fine. But now they stand for fewer freedoms, greater government intrusion, quasi-socialism (or full socialism) and collective rights over the individual. Nothing good about any of that.

Because they don't want the masses to know that they are basically trying to create a paternalistic nanny state. Liberals have nothing whatsoever to offer the American people. The people are not so stupid as liberals like to think. They are smart enough to look to our nothern neighbors or across the Atlantic to see the failed liberal policies of the Candaians and Europeans to know that they don't want any part of the shitty mess that has been created in those shitholes.

I guess I best not point out the multi-trillion dollar deficit you have, the impending devaluation of the dollar and the biggest underclass of any developed weatern nation.

I wouldnt want to shatter you illusions

Herzog, you really need to read the paper and whatch the news! Bush is TAKING our freedom and if you don't see that, you are either dillusional or medicated. Umm, you do KNOW that Bush advocates mental health testing for all Americans, under his administration, we will ALL be required to carry electronic security cards that will be inter-linked, thus making us easy to track and...and!! If you are caught without the card, you can and will be arrested.

People like you are scary. I really fear for you. You will wake up one day under Bush and you will not have nearly half the freedoms you think you do. Under him, Big Brother is not just watching...he's freakin living in your house! READ!!

Our "underclass" is better off than many middle-class families in Europe. And our debt relative to GDP is about average.

You really have to hand it to THC and his little friends, they really are under the impression that everyone is simple minded and dont see the evidence of their own eyes.

You're the socialist. I understand that everything isn't nice and peachy, but your forecasts of doom are premature.

I was answering the question put to me, no doom sayer me.

You believe the free market is the holy grail, I disagree.
