COMMENTS:
No, it comes from lack of education, bigotry, but as for a person being a psychopathic becuase he/she is racist is false. A person may be racist, but not necessarily the type of person to go out and kill over skin colour.

Ops! I meant psychopathy not psychopathology.

Which mean: "any disease of the mind; the psychological state of someone who has emotional or behavioral problems serious enough to require psychiatric intervention"

What you say aya, is just a crime, isn't it?

Racism is taught...one generation to the next.
by Tadema on Sat Feb 19, 05 11:12pm [+]

it doesn't have to be taught, it can also exist just from lack of exposure to different cultures, resulting in fearful behavior that can cause actions by a person driven by those fears.
by jappy on Sat Feb 19, 05 11:22pm [+]

It's not just taught though I do believe that is what occurs most of the time and is definitely how it is moved from generation to generation. It also can be a learned handicap via negative observations and life experiences. JMHO
by Dad2DaBone on Sun Feb 20, 05 1:26am [+]

no it comes from noticing that most of a particular race act a particular way and subconciously associating the whole race with it
by Preparation_H on Sun Feb 20, 05 8:20am [+]

No? Are you voting no!!??
The idea that one race is better than other... isn't it twisted enough to be considered a sick idea? The product of a sick mind?

Of course it is not currently considered a mental disease, but shouldn't it?

The fact that racism may be learned does not (automatically) disqualify it as a mental disease: many psychopathies are acquired trough social interaction.

What jappy said, on the other hand, seems to support the idea that it is a mental disease: just replace "fear" by "phobia" to see the connection.
by xaman on Sun Feb 20, 05 9:51am [+]

It may be; especially the [particularly rabid forms that are typified by extreme aversion and loathing that seem to transcend any basis in reality.

Also note that the vast majority of racism incidents seem to manifest as "the race of others is always inferior," implying a psychologically based insecurity or delusion.
by Cathexis on Sun Feb 20, 05 10:09am [+]

I don't think so. This is only a social issue. For example, some white people are racist because they haven't socialized with other races. We should open more, and know us more
by v_juanjacobo on Sun Feb 20, 05 11:40am [+]

Racism is a learned behavior and people can either continue to be a racist or not. However, I believe that it is on some level a form of mental illness to believe that there are those who are inferior due to their race.
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Sun Feb 20, 05 11:51am [+]

I've seen racism "learned" (i.e. handed down along generations) too often to give it any creedence as a mental disease.
by Truthseeker013 on Sun Feb 20, 05 12:00pm [+]

Its an illogical way to think or believe. Therefore, on some scale I believe it is a form a mental illness.
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Sun Feb 20, 05 12:06pm [+]

Correction: "I believe it is a form *of* mental illness."
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Sun Feb 20, 05 12:08pm [+]

Yay! That's great BBC!
by xaman on Sun Feb 20, 05 12:12pm [+]

I need to know your definition of racism first.
by thc2883 on Sun Feb 20, 05 4:32pm [+]

I should say one more thing. I don't buy the "insanity" angle, in anything. Whether learning behaviors or deciding on them, I believe in volitional choice in all things, that we have to, at some point in our lives, stand up and say, "I WANT to go down this road." One might say that one can be herded into such beliefs, and I say that one can be herded onto the start of the road. But one can turn away from the path. Life is about choice.
by Truthseeker013 on Mon Feb 21, 05 5:52pm [+]

It's a result of many social circumstances which plays on our fear of things unknown or different and is often based on an interpretation of one or a few situation(s). I'd say it is more of a social illness.
by magdalenasdollar on Tue Feb 22, 05 12:06pm [+]

No is the answer. And if you are lumping racialISM woth racis, then DOUBLE no. You can be one without being the other.

Noting average differences between races on a macro scale is not racist or insane. The people who DENY these differences are the insane ones, as they wont believe what is IN FRONT OF THEIR VERY EYES.

The distinction between racialism and racism is huge, but often ignored.
by kingAlfredTheGreat on Tue Feb 22, 05 10:46pm [+]

Political Correctness is a form of racism against white males and is deemed more dangerous than racism to society.
