THE ETHICS OF SECRET TAPINGS

[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
created Wed Feb 23, 05

Doug Weade secretly taped George W Bush and later released these embarrassing tapes to the public. Before that, Linda Tripp did the same to Monica Lewinsky, compromising Bill Clinton.

Back during the first taping event, there was a lot of controversy as to whether Linda Trippe was justified in her clandestine taping. Some forcefully asserted it was justified, some just as forcefully asserted it was not.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, let me test the waters and see whose opinions have shifted. wink

Ballot Question: Is it ethical to secretly tape someone with the intent to cause public humiliation?

Yes: It was acceptable then and it is acceptable now.
Yes and No: It was acceptable against Clinton, but not against Bush.
No and Yes: It was not acceptable against Clinton, but is acceptable against Bush.

COMMENTS:
I think it should be illegal, if it is already not. And yes, it should have been illegal in both scenarios, as well as any that occurs. Now, who would ever, in their right mind, have a conversation with anyone who has taped a conversation without consent before? That seems like a violation of one's right to privacy to me. Broadening this issue, the same should apply to people such as those in the paparazzi (or however you spell it). How can anyone say it is legitimate to take a photograph of somebody and make a profit off of it without consent?

I've enjoyed the discomfort this has caused conservatives who were doing their best to ignore the past history of our Doper-in-Chief, but I feel that it should be illegal to tape private conversations, and that includes those taped under the Patriot Act.

No matter what if a conversation is being taped everyone should know about it.

If you're going to press record, at least have the testicular fortitude to tell the other party. Or, to quote a book that seems to be in some vogue these days, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."
