DO YOU THINK MARKET CENSORSHIP IS A DRIVING FORCE IN OUR SOCIETY?

Western society, while it may suffer from some forms of direct political censorship, has a much more fluid and pernicious form of censorship - our censors are the idols of the marketplace. The standard is "Will it sell?" and that standard is broad and constantly changing.

When the market reigns, fashion reigns. Novelty becomes a marketable value. Change in fashion, in art, in consumables, in trends and in news becomes profitable. But it also needs to be safe, and not harm the consumer, and certainly not change him. Shock the consumer, titillate him, jolt her, but do make them think, because you might change them, and they might not buy your product any more.

Do you agree with the premise that market censorship controls the types of products we as a society consume - not just in typical consumables, such as gadgets and clothing, but in the novels we read, the music we listen to, the news we ingest, the politics we adhere to, the values and thoughts we might have...

COMMENTS:
Definitely. An ever-growing number of life facets are falling under market/ consumerism drives, IMO.

Even more dangerously, it is becoming the shaping force controlling media ("news"), politics, etc.

Government interference and a decaying society are the true problems. The problem isn't that we're concerned with what will sell, it's that our method of determining value has been altered from its natural state.

Absolutely - market censorship controls art, news, anything that sells.
