There's a distinct chill in the air between Washington D.C. and the Kremlin these days. Even though Presidents Bush and Putin officially met last week, a certain amount of sabre-rattling rhetoric has been directed at the new Russian 'imperialism' alleged to be taking place under Vladimir Putin, by Senators Lieberman and McCain, who have gone as far as suggesting that Putin be sanctioned by other Western nations by having Russia's G8 membership revoked.

Are things as they appear on the surface, or do you believe there are other factors causing the political temperature to drop?

The criticism of Russia is justified. Things are as they seem, nothing more to it
Washington resents Russia's aid to Iran's nuclear power program
Putin refuses to suck up to the Israeli Oil Barons currently taking refuge in Russia
Washington is afraid of a new alliance between Russia, China and Iran
Washington has its sights set on the Caspian oilfields
Multiple factors (explain)
It's a storm in a teacup and will soon blow over
This is the first I've heard of it
Not sure
Yes, because Bush is an imperialist leader
Jealousy that Balboa beat Drago

If so, I think its time for a Rocky Balboa / Ivan Drago rematch so we can settle this!

I hope not. I read an article recently (I think it was in US News?) Anyway, the article said that governments have pretty much accepted the fact that the new MO for governments around the world is one of "cotradictions" and "double standards." From what I can recall from the article, is basically meant that governments can justifiably say one thing and then turn around and do the opposite and still deny they did. Nothing new, but I thing the gist was this: "W can be elected in 2 questionable elections with major problems, but still go public and criticize Russia and the Ukraine, etc. for having questionable elections, etc." Basically, the rhetoric is way out of control and hypocricy is now the OFFICIAL politics of the new century.

Why can't everyone just get along? Bush is dangerous.

The double standard seems to be the order of the day as regards politics.

So are you saying we should accept things as they seem on the surface, Cathexis? Don't know if that would be wise with the speed of deteriorating relations. One minute Putin is chowing down BBQ at a Crawford hoe-down, next he's being accused of being a wannabe dictator. Makes me a tad suspicious of the real motives behind these hurled accusations.

Putin has shown to be just as two-faced as Bush, and there's only room for one two-faced cowboy in this town.

Probably, because the Kremlin refuses to be another puppet of the White House. I doubt sanctions will pass since European countries no longer really give a damn about what the US says anymore. Sanctions might pass but no one will follow them.

The most obvious reason is because the U.S. no longer has any real political leverage anywhere in the world. It gave that up when it invaded a sovereign nation without just cause. No longer can the White House go telling other nations to stop their nuclear programs, or to stop aggression in their own backyard (read: Chechnya). The White House simply has absolutley no credibility to act as "the moral compass of the world" that it so much wants to be.
