SCHWARZENEGGER WANTS TO IMPLEMENT "MILEAGE TAX"

[+] ballot by Duckhead
created Tue Mar 01, 05

So far, Schwarzenneger has a decent approval rating in Ca. But now he ants to implement a new tax system or "mileage". Since we have a lot more people driving fuel efficient cars, they Ca government is not enjoying as much taxes from fuel use. So he want to track cars by mileage which totally works against the people that sjuts shelled out 25K for a nice fuel efficient car, they would essentially be penalized since the majotiy of people that paid for a fuel efficient hybrid are people who drive more miles. Also hurt in this would be the poorer folks who have to commute an hour or so to work which is normal. Those who can afford to live in town would be paying considerably less. Does this sound like a good idea to you?

Also keep in mind that this would also be another case of Big Brother as they would have to keep track of mileage with Sensor and GPS equipment on your vehicle .

good idea
bad idea
WTF, will it never end?
new taxes are never a good idea

Bad idea, tax the people who waste fuel at the gas pump.
by ABC on Tue Mar 01, 05 3:01pm [+]

I can see the reasoning behind it: gasoline taxes pay for repairing and maintaining the roads in CA. Well the roads don't care how efficient your car is, it still does the same amount of damage. And right now those people are getting away with doing the same damage but paying less than everyone else.

That being said new taxes are always a bad thing, and people should be encouraged to buy hybrid cars. Cut some social programs if you need more money. Right now california is a haven for all the bums in the country because they give out more money than any other state. Use that to build roads, you can keep taxes low and maybe the bums will leave. Win-win.

actually, if Ca would not have been taken advantage of so badly by the faux energy crisis we would be okay financially.

I do alot of driving for my work, and I drive a relatively feul-efficient vehicle so I am against it. Besides, herzog is wrong. The heavier the vehicle, the more damage it does to a road over time. I should know--I used to work in highway/roadway construction. Average vehicle weight has to be taken into consideration concerning how long a road or highway will last before repairs. If there is alot of high tonnage traffic, you can expect repairs sooner than later.
by THX1138 on Tue Mar 01, 05 10:55pm [+]

Actually thx what you said had nothing to do with my argument. Weight and fuel efficiency are not the same thing. An inefficient VW bug that weighs next to nothing does less damage to the road than a more efficient hybrid mini van, despite paying a greater amount for road repair than the latter.
