That sounds cool, but I doubt he can support his statement in any way. Plus, what is he trying to say: if we would be all a bunch of narcissistic, self satisfied, overconfident and indifferent idiots, the world would be a better place?
It ain't about you! You have to ask yourself... Did I read Dr. Phil's book and buy Dr. Phil's tapes? Don't think you know what you don't know. You can't change what you don't acknowledge.
Self-respect is a bad thing?! And where do you get "over-confident" and "indifferent" from? I don't think he meant these observations to be taken that broadly. He's referring to a specific "personality type" Any person who wants to survive life in our world without having a nervous breakdown must learn self-reliance, self-respect and confidence. I don't equate these things with being 'cocky" or "narcisistic". Far from it. Actually the most narcisistic people often display an affectation of modesty and empathy.

If he was talking about a certain personality type, you should've said that (I haven't read his book). I thought he is trying to explain the origins of what some people call "intolerance".
It's stated in the first comment, he's referring to "The Frustrated" individual suffering from self-hate will often (not always) lash out at others and attack them for the very same shortcomings they themselves possess. The second comment refers to a true "self-respecting" person. They often (again, not always) are less petty and fanatical. They feel they have nothing to prove.
"The awareness of their individual blemishes and shortcomings inclines the frustrated to detect ill will and meanness in their fellow men. Self-contempt, however vague, sharpens our eyes for the imperfections of others. We usually strive to reveal in others the blemishes we hide in ourselves."Eric Hoffer. This is a good discription of the self-hating American and the europeans, Canadians, etc., who are pathologically obsessed with and irrationally despise the US. To despise the US is to hate yourself because it is made up of every race and ethnic group imaginable. The USA is the opposite of, for example, Italy. Italy is a provincial society and nation. The USA is a true cosmopolitan and diverse society.
