COMMENTS:
How about if we used even-handed diplomacy instead? I don't think throwing economic or military might around is right. Talking and negotiating is the better way.
Because then we'd be thought of as trying to buy our way into peoples' hearts and minds, which would be just as disastrous.
Use whatever works for the situation. Most of the tyrannts we have a problem with aren't our major trade partners (europe, canada, mexico, japan, etc). China is one exception but they aren't so bad as far as dictatorships go, not good mind you but they aren't in the top 10 for most evil regimes of the moment. North korea, iraq (pre invasion), libya, iran, syria, russia (?); we don't trade much with these nations, so economic sanctions wouldn't do much.
By the time Bush is finished with America, we won't have any economic power. We will all be working for the Chinese.
It already does use it's economic power by blackmail, especially in the United Nations if it wants a yes vote. It blackmails poorer nations. Vote yes or we will cut off you're aid or loans. It only goes this out of it's own self interest's
