PRO CHOICE ADVOCATES: ARE YOU AGAINST ABORTION PERSONALLY, BUT ADVOCATE FREE WILL FOR THE WOMAN?

[+] serious ballot by jappy
created Thu Mar 10, 05

Or do you believe that abortion is strictly a procedure that you see nothing wrong with?

I have found a good portion of people I visit with, online or otherwise, who are pro choice, are actually against abortion but do not believe it is their right to tell someone how to live their life. What is your stand on this issue?

Abortion is merely a procedure
Abortion is wrong but it is not my right to tell someone else they can't
Abortion is wrong period and no one should be allowed to get one
Abortion is a womans choice to be respected

COMMENTS:
There seems to be many reasons why abortion is wrong: medical, religious, philosophical.

Personally, I think that abortion should be up to the mother. There are important reasons why a child should not be brought into the world depending on the circumstances the mother is in at the time. If a woman falls pregnant from a rape, or is underage, cannot support a child finacially, or knows the child is severly disabled; these are the only reasons that should allow it.

If the mother becomes pregnant due to her own error of not using contraception, then I think that abortion shouldn't be an option unless the above factors are implicated.

Since I am not capable of giving birth, I should not dictate to anyone who is physiologically capable of doing so...I believe it is a woman's right to decide for herself. As for whether I am against abortions or not isn't important, my beliefs should not impede upon another person's right to make a decision that they believe is best for their situation. I know of many people who are pro-choice and who are for abortions, and some who have had or have a partner who had an abortion, and excellent ballot question by the way. Personally I haven't given a thought to what my personal opinion is, against or for, it really doesn't matter.

If it were a woman carrying my child, I would plead with her to have the baby, but I would understand if she opted for the abortion. For all that is said about the "wrongness" of abortion, I find it interesting verging toward amazing that most of those voicing opposition to the procedure are men, who have never had to cope with the daily process of pregnancy. I've had a peripheral link, having three sisters who's been pregnant, and that was, on some days, a slice of Hell on a sharp stick inserted in the eye. I've said this before, and here it is again. The day that science allows a man to become pregnant, when a man has to cope with the loss of his mobility, his lifestyle (being unable to pop out with the boys for a night on the town, et al), not to mention the utter joy of passing an object the size of a watermelon through an orifice the size of a grapefruit, abortion will not only be legal, but a growth franchise industry. Scoff if you like. Just walk in those shoes, then say otherwise.

Truth: while I'm not opposed to abortion I'm going to have to disagree with your reasoning. Would you say that in any vote concerning the draft all female senators should be required to sit on the sidelines and be quiet, because women aren't the ones getting drafted?

Or should only the elderly have a say in social security, or the poor with welfare, or any number of examples?

abortion is between a woman and her doctor. period.

Whether one thinks of it as a procedure or a woman's right, no one ever really knows the truth until they are put in that position. Only then will you really know how you feel about it.

thc hitler was given a choice just like everyone else no one forced him into killing millions of people.

I do not agree with abortion nor will I ever, Did you know that they once used clothes hangers for abortions? Most often the woman would get sick from it but they would rip the baby out with a hanger! Nope I see nothing good about it and I'm sorry for all the ladies who have been raped but you can always give the child up and still let him/her live.
by Kisty on Mon Mar 14, 05 1:20am [+]

I always prefer to stay away from such extremes as "never" or "always" with respect to moral issues; abortion included. The main problem I have with abortion is the way it's used as simply a (late) form of contraception. When women start having unprotected sex simply because they know even if they did get pregnant they can have an abortion (which does happen) then I think it's being seriously abused

I am not against it completely, there are medical and ethical reasons for having an abortion (preferably with better equipment or techniques than a coat hanger). For example, doctors can identify situations where a woman continuing with a pregnancy will result in both the woman AND the child dying. in such a situation I see no issue with "killing" the child who was going to die anyway, to save the mother

tricky area though, 'always' will be I think
