SHOULD RURAL AMERICANS FEEL BETRAYED BY GEORGE W. BUSH?

[+] serious ballot by cranky
created Tue Mar 15, 05

In the 2004 election, rural Americans voted overwhelmingly for George W. Bush. In the red state in which I live, 70 percent of the rural population voted for Bush. Now, Bush is proposing to slash ag programs by billions, which will put thousands of family farms out of business and have a substantial impact on the economies of a number of red states. In his public statements, Bush has likened some farmers receiving subsidies to welfare cheats.

Should rural Americans, who showed such loyalty to Bush in the election, feel betrayed by his actions now?

Yes

COMMENTS:
So sad and so predictable. Good question.

^You're right. Oh, I thought you meant the question. Don't anyone have any original ideas anymore or are 99% of us gonna just ask the same question in different forms over and over again. We get it, Bush is Satan, John Kerry would have been the greatest president ever, and the world is perfect, which means there should be no wars.
by CletuSlackedJawYokel on Tue Mar 15, 05 12:06pm [+]

Oh and CletuSlackedJawYokel
don't forget we could of all posted up signs in our yards under Kerry saying "WELCOME ALL TERRORIST, WE KNOW YOU ARE NO THREAT TO US, IT WAS ONLY A BUSH CONSPIRACY AGAINST ALL YOU PEACEFUL RADICAL MUSLIMS, WE KNOW YOU LOVE AMERICA"

This ballot was about something specific. Cranky wasn't demonizing Bush, he was opening a discussion. "Bush is Satan, John Kerry would have been the greatest president ever" seems to slam the door shut on any further comment.

Years after 9/11, our fearless retard has so thoroughly twisted the meaning of what happened that day that, in effect, he has forgotten what it was.
He's no closer to catching Bin Laden than he is to having a clue about the English language. I guess after he and OJ catch the real killer they'll get together and get Bin Laden.
It seems Bush's stock answer to anything involves the word terrorism. Kerry's terrorist friendly? As I recall, when America was under attack Bush's solution was to read MY PET GOAT.
by elvislennon on Tue Mar 15, 05 12:42pm [+]

The ballot is fair, but you'll notice that Runyon and Cletus preferred to bash Kerry (the man who would have been a great president) and avoid the topic. It's straight-thinking like that which conservatives are using to bring America down.
by cranky on Tue Mar 15, 05 1:34pm [+]

Yeah, cranky i've never seen any bush haters do that in kerry ballots. Oh, wait am minute, yes i have!!!! Not to mention ballots that have nothing to do with politics or even close, that bush was managed to get squeezed in there somehow by bush bashers. Gee, to bad were not as peace loving as democrats and stick the ballot questions.
by runyonbybirth on Tue Mar 15, 05 1:44pm [+]

Staying on topic is great for people on both sides, IMO.

What specific ag programs are we talking about? Ag programs include a wide variety of things. College research, food stamps, WIC, free school lunch programs, public nutrition as well as the farm aid. Some of these programs probably could use cutting. It depends on which programs your referring to?
by ceejjj on Tue Mar 15, 05 2:19pm [+]

One other note, I know there was talk on cutting college ag research, however, the President also included a stipulation where colleges could compete for grants with the possibility of getting more funding then they did before-it just won't be a hand out with no results like it can be now.
by ceejjj on Tue Mar 15, 05 2:21pm [+]

ceejjj:

There would be an almost 6 billion dollar cut in farm subsidies. 28 ag programs would be cut or eliminated. Ag research would be significantly changed. The present system of research is managed and reviewed just the same as competitive research. However, earmarking the money allows local government to focus on ag issues affecting local farmers/ranchers. Under the Bush plan, bureaucrats in Washington would funnel the money toward national priorities, which tend to be fad-driven or set by multi-national ag companies to benefit them.
by cranky on Tue Mar 15, 05 2:35pm [+]

Thanks. Based on that answer, I would definitely say some social ag could stand financial cuts and even some of the research, but I think I would disagree with outright farm subsidy cuts. I would have to study more exactly what that entails as I am unfamiliar with them other than surface info.
by ceejjj on Tue Mar 15, 05 3:40pm [+]

It's great to want to fund every program, but at what cost.40% of my income goes to taxes and surcharges now should I pay 50 -60%.And after that ,and I go bankrupt should I feel betrayed by The President for not cutting cost somewhere?
by Quinn_the_Eskimo on Tue Mar 15, 05 8:31pm [+]

Excellent ballot question Cranky and yes, Rural America should feel betrayed by the proposed slashing of the ag program. Bush is destroying America's way of life because he would have us all believe it is more important to liberate the Iraqi people then to feed, educate, house, employ, and liberate Americans, go figure...
