I think this movie is at least as responsible as the show Hee Haw has been in defaming rural southern people. It’s about the most derogatory film in human history, but any ignorant ass person living outside the south that has never visited the area accepts it as the gospel truth. If the movie displayed any other marginalized members of contemporary America in the same fashion it would be just frowned upon as Triumph of Will, Birth of a Nation, or the scenes in Breakfast at Tiffany’s were Mickey Rooney portrays an Asian stereotype. What do you think? Is the movie Deliverance derogatory in its portrayal of rural southerners?
