AGAIN I ASK, AM I A HYPOCRITE?

long as I can remember, I have been against the death penalty and even stated it as recent as today , but after hearing about Jessica Lunsford, my opinion of it has totally turned around, and now believe in cases like that , death penalty is warranted.

This is not a case of , he might be innocent, he confessed and I'm sure they will find plenty of evidence.

anyways, am I a hypocrite to have changed my mind about something I strongly believed in all my life?

yes
no

COMMENTS:
Emotion is a strange feeling, I dont support the death penalty, however, stories such as this really make my blood boil, and then I start to see no reason why this man should be allowed to live, but the thing I also consider is, If a man is excected, as we stooping to a lower level too, and becoming the angry mob out for revenge. Its not hypocrisy Larry, it just you feel anger and frustration at such a despicable crime, its a natural reaction of any person who has the decency to care.

No Larry, you are NOT a hypocrite. You see things in shades of grey rather than black and white.

I am against the death penalty only because it is not a perfect system: innocent people can be, and have been, executed. That is unacceptable to me. However, I think that if a person is obviously GUILTY (like OJ Simpson), s/he should be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, period.

Larry, the death penalty is actually very humane. Without it, executions would simply be enforced by the police--Mexico comes to mind.
I don't think you're a hypocrite, you're just seriously pissed. Personally, I think this guy has forfeited his right to live in a society. He needs to be executed and his organs need to be harvested.
by elvislennon on Sat Mar 19, 05 5:09pm [+]

Of course not,, it's shows that you are reasonable. If you refused to ever look at the arguments on the otherside of an issue thats just ignorant
by RawIron on Sat Mar 19, 05 6:25pm [+]

I don't think so, larry. Cases like this are why I AM pro-death penalty. My only regret is that we can't kill them soon enough after conviction or slow enough to make it hurt.

Dostoyevsky said, if you want to judge a society, judge the penal system.

Do we want to become murderers to avenge murder?

If only one innocent person is executed , that is one person too many.

We in the UK have had many instances of executions, only to have them found innocent years later.
by Steelhamster on Sat Mar 19, 05 7:22pm [+]

person who killed jessica Lunsford confessed, and one escape to kill is again is one too many
by larrynelmira on Sat Mar 19, 05 7:59pm [+]

You are in fact the complete OPPOSITE of a hypocrite, you would be hypocritical if you professed against something that you now belive in
by kingAlfredTheGreat on Sat Mar 19, 05 8:10pm [+]

I don't think you're a hypocrit at all. The fact that you actively question whether or not the death penalty is right or wrong shows that you realize how complex the question is. I am pretty much against it too, but like you said, there are cases in which I start to think that maybe in some instances its right. I know what you mean about Jessica, but still, I really think that the death penalty is wrong. Its a gut wrenching topic man. You have to follow your heart and conscience. But you're no hypocrit.
by patch22us on Sat Mar 19, 05 9:40pm [+]

There have been cases in the UK, where someone has confessed to murder, only to be found not to have actually committed the murder.

The John Christie (10 Rillington Place) murders area case in point.

I dont believe we should become murderers, let justice be meated out impartially, as mob rule makes a poor bedfellow for a just society.
by Steelhamster on Sat Mar 19, 05 10:00pm [+]

I don't think you're a hypocrite - you're willing to change your mind and to think about things deeply - I think it is a sign of maturity.

Steelhamster

You could really argue that someone stupid enought o admit to murders they havent committed DESERVES to be put down couldnt you? That sort of stupidity/ craziness should be eliminated from the gene pool
by kingAlfredTheGreat on Sat Mar 19, 05 11:19pm [+]

Someone who is confused or pressured into confessing deserves to be "eliminated" from the gene pool?
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sat Mar 19, 05 11:22pm [+]

No, you're adapting/ reacting to new information.
by Cathexis on Mon Mar 21, 05 8:49am [+]
