Mithrandir's excellent article about health insurance (in LO.com) inspired this question.

It's good, but only if you can afford it.
If it's unattainable to 40+ million people, it can't be that good.
Its good
More conservative bullshit
it's how things work, you get what you pay for

It's great providing you are not poor or in need of healthcare. :) I find it works flawlessly until I need medical attention. (It sucks!!!!!!)

Man, it must really suck to declare bankruptcy and lose your home because you recived a debilitating illness or some other health emergency beyond your control. Come on America, get with the program.
by um__yeah on Sun Mar 20, 05 10:27am [+]

It's a question of access. Besides, I think its mostly the fault of employers. My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that people who don't have healthcare insurance still get healthcare, but its paid by Medicaid. So its not that some Americans don't have coverage because for the needy, the government pays for it (it is illegal to refuse medical attention to anyone). The issue is that the medical technology is very advanced, as it is in Europe, Japan, etc., but access to the latest treatments, etc. take longer if you have medicaid. But again, I may be mistaken. Regardless, I think it is outrageous that so many people have inadequate coverage in this day and age.

We have the best health care system ,We just don't care if everyone is healthy(damn them poor folk)
by Quinn_the_Eskimo on Sun Mar 20, 05 11:46am [+]

Here in the UK, I suppose we are lucky in that we have the NHS, however, the waiting lists are long and operations are often cancelled due to a shortage of beds, so sometimes it is necessary to use private healthcare.

patch22: you can only get Medicare if you qualify - i.e. if your income is below poverty level. Middle class working people are not eligible. They neither qualify for government assistance nor can afford insurance.
by mojo on Sun Mar 20, 05 11:59am [+]

I meant MEDICAID. Medicare is for the elderly.

Here is a solution. Don't get sick.

I was being sarcastic if you didn't notice.
by Republican_RightWing on Sun Mar 20, 05 1:01pm [+]

Um Yeah. Im not saying this to be harsh, but take an economics course, see how much you really pay into a socialized system, the pitfalls of a socialized system, how in the UK, for example, people over 55 are basically sentenced to death if they need dialysis, how costs are rationed by long waiting lists, hence people dying cause of a lack of proper treatment and costs avoided, etc. etc. etc. We DO have the best healthcare on earth, just look at the stats. The concern is ACCESS to it.
by CletuSlackedJawYokel on Sun Mar 20, 05 1:15pm [+]

Being someone who would benefit substantially, on a personal level, from socialized medicine, I am still against it for the greater good. I really dont see how anyone with a basic understanding of economics could support socialized healthcare if they were looking at the complete picture.
by CletuSlackedJawYokel on Sun Mar 20, 05 1:17pm [+]

Cletus: I guess it all depends on whose 'stats' you are looking at. In England (I can only speak for a place I have lived), if you have an emergency situation, you are put at the front of the line. In the U.S., I paid a total of $8500 last year for bare-bones health insurance and medications (not covered by the bare-bones insurance). That is a crippling amount for me. I would much rather pay higher taxes for SOME form of social medicine than be slapped with a bill like that every year. I'm no indigent - I work my ass off to make a living. America is supposed to be all about free enterprise and nurturing the entrepreneur spirit - I just wish my country would put its money where its mouth is.
by mojo on Sun Mar 20, 05 1:44pm [+]

I didn't know that Mojo. That is so wrong. I hate that I was unaware of that fact. So why is President Bunglehead so eager to cut taxes, make war and hack apart social security? Wouldn't it be better if he figures out a way to make it worthwhile for all employers to offer health insurance? Does that man have his head up is a*s?
by patch22us on Sun Mar 20, 05 2:42pm [+]

Cletus ... funny, I don't see how anyone with a basic understanding of economics could be against socialized medicine. What in the world is the logic of slapping the onus on Business? It suppresses Business growth. Also, conveniently ignoring all those who fall between the cracks is not good Economics.

National healthcare is the only solution for a civilized nation.
by cranky on Mon Mar 21, 05 10:35am [+]

Quality and availability are two different things. It wouldn't be so expensive if the government got its nose out of it.

I don't understand how any moral person with an understanding of economics could support socialized healthcare.

I just had my appendix removed. I'll let you guys know what the bill comes to.

some health insurance is a friggin joke especially HMO's!!! Yet once when I was not with the HMO(before) I tried to go to a "FREE" clinic,on the poor side of town, just for a routine exam, and they would not take my money!! (this was August,2004) They said I "didn't qualify" for medi-cal,and threw me out,basically...
by xxxxxxxx on Mon Mar 21, 05 6:00pm [+]

Cletus, I think socialized healthcare is good. No nation can claim greatness on any level if it allows the less fortunate to live a life of hardship. The nation, and all of its people, have an obligation to put in place an infastructure and social system that gives those less fortunate the opportunity to better themselves. How can a struggeling family ever make it if they can't even get healthcare for themselves? I don't mean a complete socialized system, but the US has to figure out a way to help the poor in ways that count. Sorry, but the money IS there, but idiot politicians sqwander it on thing like...oh, I don't know...things like..umm... WAR! :) The poor are not some burden to plot to get rid of--they're our fellow citizens and we all have an inherent obligation to help them.
