WHO ON THIS WEB SITE WOULD WANT TO BE KEPT ALIVE IN A PERSISTENT VEGETATIVE STATE?

[+] ballot by mojo

Obviously, current events in the news inspire this question.

So, say you are alive, but your EEG reading shows very little, if any, activity. Do you believe that where there's life there's hope, and don't pull the plug on me no matter what? Or would you want your family not to drag out your - and their - pain, not to mention financial burden, and give the doctors permission to let you die?

Keep me alive, no matter what.
If I am brain dead, please let me die with dignity.

COMMENTS:
Apologies to Applerod, who submitted nearly the identical question in the Public section. I would really like to see how people here feel about this on a gut level.

for myself, I would say let me go, selfish as this may sound, for my dad, I don't think I could do it.
by larrynelmira on Sun Mar 20, 05 9:55am [+]

I admit to a double standard on this: If it was me in the state, I'd prefer to be let go to avoid trauma and expense to loved ones.

However, if it was a loved one in that state, I would do everything in my power to avoid the finality of complete death ... clinging to improbable hope and assuming that there may be some part of him/ her there, that I can at least make comfortable on a physical/ animal level.

Cathexis - even if there is no brain activity whatever?
by mojo on Sun Mar 20, 05 12:41pm [+]

Well, no one has pulled the plug on me off yet!

"By any means necessary, for as long as the technology exists, no matter what any family member might say." That's what my living will states. I'm not taking the chance (and, if this sounds like a sad attempt at humor, forgive me) that the cure to whatever killed me might be found five minutes after I die.
by Truthseeker013 on Sun Mar 20, 05 1:41pm [+]

that's what I kinda think to truthseeker, as long as you are alive there is hope, once you are gone, that's final, no chance of you returning
by larrynelmira on Sun Mar 20, 05 6:59pm [+]

Herzog doesn`t seem to mind.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Mar 20, 05 9:12pm [+]

Well I wouldn't want to die of starvation or dehydration, but I would enjoy a good morphine overdose. I would want to die a painless death is what I'm getting at.
by lowerclassbrats on Sun Mar 20, 05 10:25pm [+]

Well it'd probably be painless anyway -- if you're brain-dead, you probably aren't conscious to the pain.
by xxxxxxxx on Mon Mar 21, 05 1:24am [+]

mojo: Yeah, I know ... this is an area that I don't pretend to be rational in.
by Cathexis on Mon Mar 21, 05 8:34am [+]

again council youd have to ask herzog. though he`d probably start rambling about the un or something. you know how these mentally unfortunate people are.
by xxxxxxxx on Mon Mar 21, 05 8:52am [+]

Keep me plugged in. Who knows what developments might take place in the medical field in the future. They might be able to heal more or at least understand what these people are and are not feeling, more accurately than now.
by Tadema on Mon Mar 21, 05 9:05am [+]

unplug me, I would not want to be a burden, nor would I want my wife to be kept from living a normal life and having another normal relationship. Heck, if I was stuck in a wheelchair with normal brain function but unable to communicate I would still want to be unplugged.
by Duckhead on Mon Mar 21, 05 2:24pm [+]

Not me! I am not always sure I want to be kept alive in this persistent negetative state!
by magdalenasdollar on Mon Mar 21, 05 7:45pm [+]

mobs, it really only makes you look like the unfortunate one when you dwell on another user and bring it up consistently in an unrelated topic. It's not funny anymore.
by magdalenasdollar on Mon Mar 21, 05 7:47pm [+]

Dont be so negative mags.

Well, I say pull the plug chances are if i were to come out of the state i may have brain damage or lose of use of some of my limbs. I for sure would not want to live like that or put my family through that.
by dayumyumxanax on Wed Mar 23, 05 9:40pm [+]

If I had a flat EEG, I'd want to be unplugged, unhooked, untubed.
