Please respect that this ballot is to find out what makes Americans love thier country. This ballot is not intended to be a self-serving braggin session or anything remotely like that. I love the United States because of its spirit and sense of purpose. I love the American people, who I think are warm, generous and trusting. I love the USA because even though I don't like our current President too much, I'm allowed to say it out loud. I love our country because I really believe that we care about people, even though we sometimes screw up in how we show it. I love the USA because in America, we go on and on about how cool Europe is, even though they don't respond in kind. I like that. Basically, I am grateful every day that I am an American and I don't care who lashes out at me for that. I am not going to be ashamed to say that I love my country and my fellow Americans. My detractors can say I'm being arrogant, but I'm not. I'm just expressing how I feel.

Lots of things. On the superficial side I like the food, scenery, people, cultures, comparably low taxes and high standard of living. On the more philosophical side I love the fact that we are one of the most free nations on earth at the moment, that people in this country are largely left to do whatever they want (not ideal but when compared to other nations we're pretty well off).

I wanna see Florida

To our friends to the north, thanks! I've been to Canada a few times and absolutely love it! Montreal and Toronto are awesome! I also went to a down called Oramacto (think that is how its spelled) and the hotel was on the water and it was seriously breath taking. Though off topic, I want to also point out that the Canadian people are super nice and really warm! See, we have more in common than people give us credit for.

Aya, when you go to Florida, go to a place called Amelia Island. My Grandparents have a house there and it is really nice! It's northern Florida, so the water is not azure blue, but its still really beautiful.

Well, I am sorry to say that some American users on here did not participate because they feel they are far too high brow to admit love of a nation...even their own. This is one of the many reasons why liberalism is in the toilet and ONE of the many reasons that Bush won! If you can't even bring yourselves to list why you love your country, then YOU are the reason why Bush won! This was a test to see who would respond and how. It worked.

In fact, one user who I respect totally floored me with: I find I don't really have much to say on it. There are, of course, many things that I like about this country. But ... love of a "country" ... to me, it just seems a bit ... parochial.

Yeahm, right!
by patch22us on Thu Mar 31, 05 11:27am [+]

Yes, these days, I admit that I am fed up with the talk of Love of Country. Sure, some folks mean it, and that is fine -- patch, I'm sure you're one of them who truly love shis country ... enough not to just give lips ervice to it. But the phrase has been twisted and politicized and used so badly that I don't have much taste for it, these days. The phrase is too often used just like the damned magnetic yellow ribbons ... as a covert way of coercing agreement with Rightwing Politics by linking the bad with something Good.

I know that this doesn't apply to you patch22us ... apologies if that's how it came across. But right now I am deeply shamed by what has been allowed to go on for the past 5 years in the US and I'm not in a good mood to blind myself to it and look for what might remain that hasn't been corrupted yet. Well ... maybe one thing: The Hope that the System is self-correcting enough to survive extremism and corruption. I feel that anything else I point out will be pounced upon by the political extremists as "validation" of their actions.
by Cathexis on Fri Apr 01, 05 7:46pm [+]

People who truly love their country love the ideals and principles ... not just the lip service ... and will not feel comfortable (or, yes, proud) until we return to those ideals and principles.
by Cathexis on Fri Apr 01, 05 7:48pm [+]

The above isn't directed at you, patch22us ... you are not and have never been the problem.
