AM I GETTING OLD, OR IS MODERN POP RUBBISH?

It must be a symtom of age, but I am almost convinced that the pop of my formative years (the late 70s and early 80s) was much better than the stuff we have now.

Thats not to say they dont have some cool bands and artists now, Im talking about the POP.

I am especially referring to these manufactured boy and girl groups and especially those absolutely brain dead 'star search tv shows' like Pop idol and such.

Yes, Pop is rubbish now
No, yer just old grandad
I have a different view, please see comments.

It's not you getting old...pop music nowadays is shi*e
by seamus on Sat Mar 26, 05 8:52pm [+]

Yes, it is really shitty.

After I'd say 1990 pop music really took a dive into the ground and failed. And then after '94 rock took the dive. These boy-girl bands fail after the first year and their fans usually end up being 12-13 year olds.
by Kaiser on Sat Mar 26, 05 9:12pm [+]

80% of rock is crap now. Pop is 100% pure sh*t.

You're absolutely right, Steel.

I asked myself those same two questions fairly often. I think the answer to both questions is yes - I am getting old and modern pop is rubbish.

What Kaiser said. After '90, it was Toilet City, baby.

It's no symptom of age - it's a symptom of having at least a decent ear for music. The real tragedy is the kids who are way overexposed to this crap, and underexposed to diverse and quality music.

Ah yes .. back before Music became Corporate ... I remember that ...

You're getting old. I don't like it either but if it does qualify as "pop" (popular) music then it's obviously not rubbish to millions of adoring little prepubescent girls. Rubbish to you is gold to the little varmints. And I bet they outnumber you oldies.
by ThisIsNate on Sun Mar 27, 05 4:03pm [+]

Ummm, even today pop music from the past is more popular and better known than pop from today.
by Kaiser on Sun Mar 27, 05 5:56pm [+]

It's all about marketing, demographics, corporate concepts and solutions. It's a money-making machine catering to morons with expendable income. I haven't seen anything original since 1988 when Samantha Fox had someone constantly rapping her name in a song.

You read my mind,Steelhamster!I love listening to 80's pop but todays pop is garbage! How can anyone call Nsync and Backstreet boys POP?Weird....
by drinkaholic on Sun Apr 03, 05 11:15am [+]

Do those two still even exist anymore?
by Kaiser on Sun Apr 03, 05 9:04pm [+]

Pop is rubbish now, but IMO, 80s pop was also rubbish.

Most teenagers need to have music that their parents don't like, but for quite a while there has been nothing 'new' or exciting. The music now doesn't inspire young romantics to say, 'that's our song.' There is no longer any romance in music. Pop is too manufactured and that's because these singers have their voices altered so much in the studio. Apart from that, the songs do not possess the good 'hooks' or melody lines as in some of our songs from the past. But, a lot of those songs were weak on hearing them again. The youngsters can not be discerning if they only get plasticky sounding music to listen to. I do know some young people that like the music their parents like, and have broadened their tastes, especially musicians. As this question is about music and that's my business, look out for my name. I'm about to hit the scene with my boogie/blues band. Mitch Ryder, Jerry Lee mixed with Etta James and Bonny Raitt. Originals in the same vein too. Don't worry folks, I'll get them to appreciate the REAL music again!
