oh, heck! I've had people who thought I was jesting in the context of a comment when I was being utterly serious, and vice versa. It's just the way my brain runs. Or fails to, as the case may be.

I think for me it is partly that i'm physically unassuming, invisible almost. When I quip no one sees it coming.
