COMMENTS:
I am hoping that these things follow a trend like an upward sine wave. Right now, we seem to be in a trough, admittedly. But I am hopeful that, with so many bad examples to learn from, future generations will do better. Now, if they can maintain those advances and remember history ...
It will take a long time to advance beyond this wild west mentality. I can only feel that we've taken a few steps backwards since the days of peace and love in the 1960s. Perhaps it's my fault and I am the anti-Christ and I want you all to sacrifice yourselves for Enron and Halliburton.
I think we have hope. Don't forget: 1. Television is much more entertaining now than it was ten years ago. 2. DVD players have gotten real cheap 3. KFC delivers 4. Brittney Spears is pregnant
The pope may be right, but he shares part of the blame. Look at the church's stance on condoms and AIDS in Africa, look at the current pope's statements on the sex abuse scandal. This is where he tried to minimize it saying it was part of an effort to discredit the church. I think that there have been times in history where there is little regard for human life and other times when things are relatively at peace.
The next generation has YOU, larry, and others LIKE you. That's the seed of hope.
One hopeful note: Every generation in memory has always characterized the generation behind them as "doomed." As it happens, this has, at least so far, turned out to be false. Perhaps it is that all species watch their young with concern as they thrash about, learn and adapt, and test the boundaries of their reality. Our job is to let them learn their lessons, and to get involved when they seem to be pushing the limits in some especially harmful way. A real mistake we can make is to not let them get bloody noses and learn. When the next generation watches their parents age and die, they will do as every generation has always done: they will put on their clothes, go to work, and start to get really concerned about the behavior of the young people. Interesting ballot. Thanks.
