SHOULD PEOPLE REALLY WAIT UNTIL MARRIAGE TO LOSE THEIR VIRGINITY?

[+] ballot by RobinGaylord

Sure medically it is safer but it’s also safer not to overeat and that’s not stopping the majority of Americans. My point is that if you get married and you never have been with anyone else your going to eventually want to see if your missing out on anything and I guarantee that most people that are virgins on their wedding night will cheat at one point or another. What do you think? Should people really wait until marriage to lose their virginity?

I say do whatever you want.

When making such a major commitment like that, I'd say that it's not unreasonable to ask for a test drive.
by _Beelzebubba on Fri Apr 29, 05 1:46pm [+]

Yes, I agree with your logic there. We don't need a higher divorce rate.
by nuckinfutz on Fri Apr 29, 05 2:07pm [+]

I meant no, they shouldn't wait.

For once, I agree with Cletus: it should be their call.

It would be better if everyone stuck to it, fewer children born out of wedlock (not a religious concern to me, but it does make a difference in the kids chances), fewer STDs, fewer kids dropping out of highschool to have their babies, etc.

But realistically that won't happen. So people should have all the fun they want and accept the responsibilities and risks that come with it. You're free to do as you want, this is a good thing, but what people forget is that you're also free to accept the consequences of those actions.

Herzog, don't let marriage get in the way of your virginity.
by elvislennon on Fri Apr 29, 05 6:27pm [+]

Robin, do you really think that people who demonstrate the virtue of abstinence before marriage are then more likely than their less virtuous counterparts to cheat after marriage? This seems seriously controversial. It doesn't ring true to me. Here's what you are claiming:

S-1: Couples who have been faithful and virtuous in their lives before marriage are more likely to cheat after marriage.

S-2: People who have not been faithful or virtuous before marriage are less likely to cheat after marriage.

This doesn't seem to work. On the other hand, I have absolutely no data to offer, and I accept that what you say might be valid.

In any event, I enjoyed your ballot. Thank You.

One small addendum to the above: If you are able to wait, if not for marriage, then for sex with someone you really love, I think that has a huge payoff: Sex with someone you love exists in a different universe than impersonal sex with strangers. So, I would minimally advise that it is great if you can restrict yourself to people you love.

But maybe that's just me?

Thanks again.

That depends on whether they ever plan on getting married.
