COMMENTS:
The obvious answer is obviously, "no." Still, competition has resulted in many, many gains for our humanity. What comes to immediate mind is the arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. This competition ultimately resulted in the fall of the Soviet Union, and at the same time created a multitude of new technologies and materials that benefitted all humanity. Second case in point: The space race. After the Soviets got the first man in space, our scientists (with credit to Werner Von Braun) raced to the lead, landed a man on the moon, and spun off a host of useful products to the world. In areas like art, or architecture, or music, there is certainly competition, but it is generally more subtle. Yeah, I must admit that competition has done more for technology and science, and less so for relationships and the arts. Thanks for an interesting ballot.
Competition is good for some things but compassion is also very important.
