WOULD CHRIST SUPPORT THE DEATH PENALTY?

[+] ballot by xxxxxxxx
created Tue May 03, 05

Would Jesus have favored the death penalty as applied in America?

Consider his compassion, quotes (i.e., "love your neighbor as yourself,"
"forgive those who harm you," "let he who is without sin cast the first stone," et al.), and admonitions. Think about Christ forgiving the thief on the cross, and wanting to save all humanity (so long as you live, there is a chance to be "saved"), and the fact that all sin is equal in God's eyes. Christians are so named because they are ostensibly following Christ's teachings. So, can you imagine Christ pulling the switch to fry someone in the electric chair, or sticking a needle in some convict's arm to kill him?

Well, you'll let me know, I expect.

Yes
No
I don't have a clue.
Who cares, eh?
I'm not Christian, why would I care?

COMMENTS:
I have never supported the death penalty until recent events In Florida.

Christ probably wouldn't support the death penalty, or I'm sure he would not fry someone as you put it.

And yes, as long as you are living you have a chance to be saved, but how many children will have to be killed before that person decides to give up his evil ways.
by larrynelmira on Tue May 03, 05 5:45pm [+]

Nah, he believed in forgiveness didnt he?
by xxxxxxxx on Tue May 03, 05 5:53pm [+]

Of course not--but because he was supposedly the Christ. First and foremost, Yeshua ben Joseph was a Jew. Although the Torah advocates the death penalty, most scholars of Judism will tell you that Jewish oral law makes it almost impossible to kill someone who committed murdered. Anthropologically speaking, in a small society surrounded by enemies capital punishment isn't a very good idea. Such a society needs murderers--they just need to point them in the right direction.
by elvislennon on Tue May 03, 05 5:58pm [+]

He did believe in forgiveness , but I'm not Christ and I can not forgive people like the one who killed Jessica Lunsford , and I don't want to .

I have absolutely no compassion at all for these people who rape and molest and kill children.

I'll be the the first to admit, I'm a hypocrite when it comes to this matter.
by larrynelmira on Tue May 03, 05 6:02pm [+]

I think he would support it. He sends lots of people to Hell for their sins which is like a death penalty/sentence.
by mysticalknight on Tue May 03, 05 6:03pm [+]

No, he would not support it.

And it regard to the above comment, Jesus does not "send people to hell" all people are welcome into heaven, all you have to do is ask forgiveness.
by Erasmus_Mason on Tue May 03, 05 6:08pm [+]

No cigar, Larry. The choice is not between letting these monsters prowl the streets or killing them. It's between locking them down for the rest of their miserable lives or killing them.

In many ways, if you are seeking revenge, I think being locked down in prison for the rest of my life without the possibility of parole is much, much worse than getting put to sleep with a needle. So, perhaps this is some comfort for people who need revenge (which, I must admit would probably be me if I had a daughter kidnapped, raped, and buried alive). It satisfies the revenge need and simultaneously gives the prisoner a shot at redemption.
This is the best of all worlds, Larry.

So, do you want instant gratification, or to enjoy a long, slow foreplay while taking your revenge. Well, I wax Poe-esque. Enough already.

Thanks for your input.
by xxxxxxxx on Tue May 03, 05 6:14pm [+]

I dont think you just "ask" for forgiveness because that would be too easy. People are taught all different things when it comes to Heaven and Hell. I've never read the Bible, so I dont know though..
by mysticalknight on Tue May 03, 05 6:17pm [+]

no cigar is right, jails are not excape proof, will not even consider the idea of just locking them up , nope, that's not an option
by larrynelmira on Tue May 03, 05 6:19pm [+]

this person admitted to killing her, are you still saying no death penalty for him?
by larrynelmira on Tue May 03, 05 6:21pm [+]

because I think you are just aganist the death penalty period, no matter what the crime and no matter what the evidence is. that is not acceptable for me
by larrynelmira on Tue May 03, 05 6:21pm [+]

no, do not want instant gratification, I want to make sure that person never has the chance to kill again, and giving them death is the only sure way to do that.
by larrynelmira on Tue May 03, 05 6:29pm [+]

as a matter of fact, I don't even think of it as revenge or punisment for the person
by larrynelmira on Tue May 03, 05 6:31pm [+]

So larry, do you expect people to rot and die in prison while serving a life sentence? One of the reasons there's a death penalty is because it helps empty the prisons of people who would just end up taking up room while serving a life sentence. Lots of prisons/jails are overpopulated as it is and need to be emptied in some way..
by mysticalknight on Tue May 03, 05 6:35pm [+]

Sorry larry, I read a comment of yours wrong and thought you were against the death penalty.
by mysticalknight on Tue May 03, 05 6:37pm [+]

To answer the ballot question, absolutely not...For those who believe in a physical place called, "Hell," it is my understanding that Christ isn't the gate keeper of hell and he doesn't make the decision who will and will not be d*mned to hell for all eternity. If one is to believe what is written in the bible, it is the sinful behaviors of each person who decides if one will burn for all eternity...

Also, I do not believe in the death penalty. However, Larry does make a point regarding the brutal treatment of children at the hands of the sadistic Nutjobs. I have a difficult time being forgiving of these individuals. However, until the death penalty is equally distrubuted regardless of race, gender, soci-economic and educational background, and all the other attributes that makes us all different from each other, I can not support it...
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Tue May 03, 05 7:08pm [+]

Damn, you got SO close to making an entire comment with no mention of racial inequality Babs!

Are you getting better at last?
by kingAlfredTheGreat on Tue May 03, 05 8:34pm [+]

Hell Yes. He kills people in natural disasters, diseases, starvation, etc. for no reason at all.

I guess he does it to amuse himself on his off days.
by Grapost on Tue May 03, 05 9:19pm [+]

I don't know let me ask him. O wait, he ain't here right now. I'll have to leave him a note.
by Dingleberry on Tue May 03, 05 10:39pm [+]

He'd say "Yeah, yeah...whatever...I'm busy writing this sermon leave me alone."
by exarmydude on Tue May 03, 05 11:57pm [+]

Jesus doesn't seem to have had a problem with Mosaic Law, which included the death penalty, as he urged his followers to uphold the law at all times - including such classics as children who curse their parents should be put to death. Oops.
He did make some interesting comments though. "let him without sin cast the first stone" was said at a public stoning. Now, you could argue that He was against the death penalty but it could also be argued that he was saying only God has the right to cast the first stone. Tricky.
Certainly, early Christians upheld the belief that some crimes deserved capital punishment.

Great question.
by wideheadofknowledge on Wed May 04, 05 12:32am [+]

If a man does something to deserve the death penalty, say he kills his wife, and child, we'd believe he should die. But I don't really think Christ would support the death penalty. It's a sin to kill, one way or another. It's not for us to kill someone, just because they did it, first. I say let God sort them out.
by xxxxxxxx on Thu May 05, 05 12:11pm [+]

I don't see how it matters. Chirst, even as the only begotten son of God, was still a man who lived in the context of his times. Would he overturn moneychangers tables today? The point is that there is no point in trying to get Christ on your side like this. If true, Christ gave humanity the ability to make these decisions. If you are in a state of grace then that is all that is needed.
by xxxxxxxx on Thu May 05, 05 11:37pm [+]

No I don't believe Christ would Support the death penalty but thats just my opinion.
by Kisty on Fri May 13, 05 1:59am [+]

The Bible teaches thou shall not kill but it also teaches an eye for an eye and Jesus never said he came to change the old testament. So I guess you could go both ways for this one.
and inter it looks like you’re a Christain, how do you feel about the fact that Bush and Chaney worship Molech at bohemium Grove? If you don’t believe me look it up and watch the movie dark secrets inside Bohemium Grove. They admitted the reporter snuck into it and filmed the evil ritual to Molech.
by seon on Fri Oct 07, 05 11:22pm [+]

yes, because, he wouldn't want those criminal shitheads to be up in "Heaven" with all the good people.
by hlobubbles on Fri Oct 21, 05 11:59am [+]

I am not Christian, but from what I have read and heard about Jesus, I do not believe he would support it.
by Psycho_Frighead on Wed May 03, 06 2:38pm [+]

Without trying to be too inflamitory, Jesus would believe in the death penalty. Best bit of PR he got was a result of it.
