YOU KNOW WHEN PEOPLE SAY, THAT WILL BE MORE PUNISHMENT?

When debating the death penalty, arguements are always, life in prison will be worse punishment than death.

How do we know that? To us, it would be worse, but people who kill and molest, are not like us, they think differently than we do, the very fact they do these unthinkable crimes show that.

Maybe for them laying in a jail cell and receiving 3 meals a day is not punishment. Maybe for them, 50 years of thinking of what they did means nothing, because if they can bury someone alive, they probably do not have a conscience.

I just think people should consider that when they make that arguement against the death penalty.

something to consider
no,death penalty is wrong for any reason
I completely support the death penalty

COMMENTS:
I am against the death penalty ONLY there are known cases where innocent people have been executed - people who have been found not guilty only after their deaths. So, if you're alive and in prison, and some new evidence (or technology such as DNA) is discovered, you still have a chance to live and be free. I.E., where there's life there's hope.

However, on a more visceral level, I often say, "Fry the bastards," when it's obvious they are guilty and have been virtually caught red-handed.

As for whether it's better to malinger in prison than die, I guess that is up to the individual. For some people in some cultures, to be locked up is a fate worse than death.

It's a huge dilemma and this is a good ballot.

The death penalty does not reduce the felony crime rate. And you have that little problem of accidentally executing an innocent person. I've never believed that showing that showing killing is wrong by killing someone is the way to go. Not that I believe these people have any worth. Hardly. Removing the death penalty removes the lynch mob mentality after a horrible crime is committed. Angry (even justified) responses do not reflect a culture at it's best.

Prison/jail isn't laying around and eating three times a day.
Go to your bathroom and stand in your shower--imagine doing that for three months--imagine doing that for the rest of your life--and that's the best case scenario. Now throw in getting your ass kicked and raped. Once raped a prisoner is then targeted by the whole population unless the perpetrator protects him. Prison especially state prison)is complete insanity. Prison is a failure but it's a reality that isn't going away.
Prisons are expensive. Their primary function is to provide employment for rural rednecks most of whom would otherwise be on welfare. The prison system is a subsidy assuring a base of yokels to vote for Republicans. The conservative love prisons...till they end up there.

elevis, yes, for most people, those things you say are true, but these people who kill and molest are not like us, they don't think like we do, what is punishment for us, might not be for them. that was the point of my ballot , that everyone seemed to miss

The state should not be murdering people, in my opinion. But you are right, there isn't any way to know how prison will impact someone, especially a deranged individual.

I hear you larry,
my point is this, don't worry, they're getting what they deserve.
In fact, a death row prisoner is in a separate population. It's neearly impossible for them to come into contact with anyone but their lawyer and a guard. Laying in a jail cell & 3 meals a day is pretty much what a death row inmate does.
But I hear you, when they get out they're only going to be worse--hence, the death penalty.
by elvislennon on Wed May 04, 05 5:59pm [+]

We don't know that they will "suffer more". The idea of elevating personal revenge to a state responsibility apalls me. I would never sit on a death penalty jury. And I wouldn't ever convict someone who killed the murderer of their loved one.

Sooo, we meet again in this same arena, Larry?

Here is a good way to get a grip on a lifetime in a prison cell: lock yourself in the smallest bathroom you have; have someone lock the door so that you cannot get out. Sit there for 23 hours a day, for say, a week. Imagine it for a lifetime without the possibility of parole locked in a maximum security prison with other inmates who hate you and are always looking for a way to kill you.

Then imagine only a couple of years sitting on death row and then being led off to receive a small skin prick as a needle is inserted in your arm, and then you go to sleep.

And, once again, the death penalty is unfair mainly because it is not uniformly applied to rich and poor. It is also suspect because a percentage of death row inmates have been recently freed by DNA evidence clearly refuting their guilt. More are doubtless innocent but do not have the benefit of DNA evidence. Scary stuff.

Are you willing to execute some innocents so that you can satisfy your blood lust? If this is the case, just don't try to convince me it is somehow rational, fair, and just to do this. If you want a lynching, be clear about it, and don't dress it in those pretty clothes.

The death penalty as applied in America has too many holes to be fair.

Interesting position, however strongly I disagree.

by xxxxxxxx on Wed May 04, 05 10:45pm [+]

Griffin the average time on death row is decades not a few years. I generally agree with your position I just think it is better to be honest about the facts of the matter as opposed to disingenuous.

The question was, we do not think like these people so how do we know life in prison would be so bad for them. We do not bury people alive, that was my point, people say life in prison would be worse punishment than death, for us maybe, but we do not know if it would be for the monsters out there.
