PARADOX ON WHAT CONSTITUES A FINANCIAL CRISIS

[+] ballot by Cathexis

Perhaps someone can explain an apparent contradiction to me ...

A projected Social Security deficit of $100 billion or so a year, about 20 years out, seems to terrify the Bush Administration. However, the $400+ billion dollar deficit the are currently running in the General Fund is perfectly acceptable ... in fact, they want to solidify that making the Tax Cuts for the Wealthy permanent.

Why is a projected deficit decades from now a "crisis" when it is a fraction of the deficit they have imposed on us now?

Rhetoric to mask real motive: Do away with Social Security program
what does it mean if our president's a stupid pig?

Curious stuff to be sure. Perhaps the answer lies in the context in which you frame the problem. Consider, as a practical matter there is actually not much of a problem here, except, except, Republicans have historically hated Social Security as a "socialist" program. Hence, GWB and his neocon cronies feel a compulsion to attack this child of liberal thinking. They must defame Social Security as failed in providing the promise it made. This also connects with them needing to stain "Socialist Healthcare" efforts (if one "social" program can be shown not to "work," the public will certainly not support another, eh?) Of course, they will not allude to the fact that every administration since Roosevelt has "borrowed" (read "stolen") from the program to fund pet projects. Without such draining of the SS fund, it would be well ahead of the curve GWB likes to describe as a looming catastrophy. But forget that. The Republicans have a knee-jerk rejection of all programs which provide universal benefit to the common people. Period.

And, we need to remember here that the "investment accounts" Americans will be paying into will principally benefit whom?
Betcha got that one right. Exactly, GWB's wealthy friends and benefactors.

Now, if we frame the problem differently what does it look like? Hmmm. Social Security is going broke in about 20 years, so we have to save it by doing some private investment. If you think something different, you are not a true, patriotic American. Rather, you are a deplorable socialist, and you probably also believe that the poorest Americans and their children should have healthcare costs paid by Uncle Sam, and why, you may be so crazy as to believe that solving the "Social Security Problem" is as easy as rechanneling some of the billions the government extorts from its citizens into the SS fund, eh? Further, you probably want to cut those pork barrel projects in Lousiana, huh? I knew it, you pinko fag!

Lots of thoughts; so little space and time.

Enjoyed your ballot. Thanks.

Of course Bush is full of it but getting rid of SS is a good idea.

Nice try but no cigar. The fact that there is never the ability to solve all problems at once does not mean that you shouldn't at least try to solve some. Or at least get started.

Besides I think that the conservatives/Repubs feel that there will be oil wealth coming in to pay for the current account deficit.

I tried to say something about how much I love George Bush for taking care of me so good but it logged me out and lost it again)

inter: I agree ... it may be unrealistic to try to address all at once.

Me ... I am in favor of tackling the big ones (most dangerous) first ... that would be the bloated budget deficit.
