WHAT IF WE KNEW, BEYOND DOUBT, THAT THERE WAS NO HEREAFTER. WOULD IT CHANGE YOUR BEHAVIOR?

Many people are motivated to be good, to follow the rules, because they fear the possibility of punishment in the hereafter.

Others are good, and follow the rules, because they want to earn a place in "heaven."

If we could know, absolutely, that there was no hereafter (no possibility of punishment or reward), would it change your behavior? If so, in what ways? If not, why?

My behavior wouldn't change
I would do a lot more "bad" things
Can't imagine
Gloat at believers a bit more...
My behaviour HASN'T changed

COMMENTS:
Wouldn't change anything for me. I have always held myself to a high personal standard - and I like to be able to sleep with myself at night.

^ Sorry if that sounded arrogant. I'm very strict with myself.

It wouldn't change anything for me either, I'd still be evil. But I may be good in future, for I too would like to sleep with Mojo at night. ;o)

Many of us are good because we don't need someone we screwed over getting even.

For myself, I wouldn't so much as change stride. I've always lived to my own personal standard, which is strongly based on the faith I used to follow reverantly. I'd worry more for those I know who've strived to live the straight-and-narrow life in the wish to reach the Hereafter in good standing, for their own emotional well-being.

Thank you god for holding out this carrot or I'd kill and steal everything in sight.

I am satsfied there is no hereafter - when i die, i die, get cremated and thats it! So, no, i cant see anything changing in my life if someone else proved to their own satisfaction that there is nothing after death!
by quirk99 on Sun May 08, 05 3:49pm [+]

No, it wouldn't change my bahviour.

Well ... perhaps it would change my behaviour a little ... I'd spend a lot more time baiting Televangelists. ;-)
by Cathexis on Mon May 09, 05 4:35pm [+]

It probably would but yet not sure in what way because I would still do what I thought was right.
by Kisty on Fri May 13, 05 1:55am [+]

I am already certain beyond a dounbt that there is no hereafter, therfor my bahvior would not change.

I have one chance to live and I plan to make the best of it.
