Odd, although I guess it does make sense. Sailors have historically been among the most superstitious people. This is found in every culture (everyone with people going to sea) and in every era.
Interesting. I knew they had alot of superstitions, but I didnt know they actually didnt deploy on Friday the 13th.
There is a lot of superstitions out there about the number 13, i mean people wont even move into houses if the door number is 13. I've also heard that apartment and office blocks are built without a thirteenth floor (where the number 13 is replaced with a 14). I dont think i have ever been unlucky on that date but then again i am not superstitious. I reckon people who are unlucky are just a bit paranoid about the whole thing and not consentrating on the world around them, thats why they are unfortunate.
I think you may be right d_wright but then again yesterday I did feel a bit unlucky.
People also wont fly or shop on Friday the 13th now I think thats going a little over board.
lol@steel
They're easier targets that way. btw I live on the 13th floor of a building for ~7yrs.
Glad to know our military is being run with rationality and reason.
I would've made a bad sailor, then. Friday the 13th, and I'd be calling for a full fleet deployment, were I the CNO. What's the worst that could happen?
hehe who know I don't believe in bad luck.
I don't think the US Navy's decision/tradition is -directly- because of superstition. Superstitions (generally) arise with anxiety, and sailors can justifiably get very anxious what with the uncertainties of a voyage (though less so now). If the crew is superstitious, whoever decides when to leave port will stop them sailing on a supposed unlucky day not from their own fears, but because the crew would resent it, be unsettled, and at worst, usurp the captain. The US navy probably doesn't deploy on Friday 13th for the mental security and health of it's Navymen.
sorry, to finish my point: it's an indirect cause. like anyone cares about that bit anyway hehe
And so, as much as I'd love to be horrible to the USA, I'll be nice to human beings and vote "It's good"
