WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PRESIDENT'S PROPOSAL TO MAKE THE PATRIOT ACT "TOUGHER?"

CNN reported today that President Bush has submitted a Bill to Congress that would make the "Patriot Act" tougher.

Specifically, the President wants the Federal Bureau of Investigation to have the power to issue its own subpoenas, without having to go before a federal judge and establish that they have enough evidence ("probable cause") to arrest and bring an accused before the court.

Some claim that if the FBI is given such power it will eliminate one tier of due process of law and move us closer to a police state.

Others claim that because of terrorist threats, we must make it easier for the FBI to go after suspected terrorists, and that the average American has nothing to fear from such an increase in police power.

My question is, where do you come down on this issue.

The FBI needs this power in the war against terrorism.
The FBI has enough power and doesn't need this additional power.
They do what they want to now, so how is this different?
We need to end the Patriot Act, not make it tougher
Who cares, eh?
Encroaching totalitarianism
more power to the police and FBI
Bush should be impeached for treason
Hitler did it, so whats the big deal?
u still listenin to this stupid?

Impeach Bush, the would-be dictator. Bush is the most unAmerican president this country has ever had.

I wouldn't say totalinarianism. I'd say theocratic totalinarianism. "In God we trust- OR ELSE."

The moment you start bypassing the courts is the moment you abandon justice.

As fas as i can gauge it the American Government will now have the power to arrest suspects for an INDEFINITE amount of time, without having to prove reasonable suspicion, and without having to allow media coverage of any sort. If that isnt totalitarian power then what is?

Next theyll be taking them to room 101 and getting rats to eat their face..

I generally support the Patriot Act in its current form. I think that most of its provisions should be kept. However there should be some needed revisions.

THE FBI ABSOLUTELY SHOULD HAVE TO GET AUTHORITY. This is of monumental importance. What would be gained in expediency would be lost in the quality of rights that we all should cherish.

Anyone who agrees with the patriot act is un-American neo conservative. The patriot act basically takes away your consetutional (cant spell) rights. To all the supporters read the consetution then read the patriot act.
Back to the question the new and improved patriot act is going to give more power to the police and FBI and make America even more of a police state.

I fail to see the harm in needing to turn to a judge to get a subpoena. I don't support it.

I support the Constitution, the exact opposite of the Patriot Act.

I fail to see the harm in needing a judge to get a subpoena. It keeps the checks and balances alive. I don't support the proposal.

I support the Constitution -- you know, the document that tends to state the opposite of the Patriot Act.

Well on our way to becoming the Police State that the Far Right envisions.

One is truly either "with them or against them." And make no mistake: They will not suffer those against them.

^Do you have any evidence of that? I mean I worry about things like creeping fascism and/or communism but really, are you that much of a scared person that you believe the tripe you spout?

Inter the police have way more power then they did before 911. They can now search people’s houses without a search warrant. Section 802 of the patriot act says that terrorism is now (A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State.
Lets not forget what Bush once said "things would be easier if this was a dictatorship. As long as I was the dictator"
