COMMENTS:
Iwould on two conditions 1. That it take effect in 20-30 years so as to not benefit anyone right now, like Arnold. 2. That the person have spent 75% of their life as a resident of the US.
No, if they were not born here they should not be permitted to server as our president. How would others feel if Americans moved to other countries and then tried to become their president?
My God, Inter! We agree on two questions in the same day? Whaa?? How?? I'm stupified!
RogueZealot, are you aware that there is a large number of Americans that are born outside of the US and are citizens of those countries just because they were born there even thought they lived in the US their entire lives and grew up in the US? That happens a lot of times and I don't think they should be turned down just because of their birth place.
I personally believe if you pay into the tax system of a country you should be given the same rights, that means running for office. Else those unable to vote or be elected to office, should be tax exempt.
I don't know. I want to say yes because it seems only right, but right now, I really have to say no. I tend to agree with inter_regnum about them having to live here at least 75% of their lives, but even at that, I still lean towards no.
I assume George Galloway is on everyones minds when they answer this question?
anyone can be the president of the united states. as long if you know what is going on and your a corupted person. cus thats how the governments want it. when can a asian man be president; born here to be president? how bout a black? how bout a mexican? how a bout an asian man? never!! you have to be white and born here and white to be president of the united states. am i wrong?
Icky, I of course haven't lived your life. I probably shouldn't say this but I voted for Jesse Jackson in the 1988 Democratic Primary. I don't hold race, religion or gender, or ethnicity to account. I would vote for a female president and I would vote for a person of color for president. It does seem to me that you are right, except to add that you have to be a white RICH male to be president. It is unfortunate. Many of our allies have had a female leader, and many more that most Americans would consider backwards have had female leaders.
Excellent points Inter and Ickyone. I don't know if it is a matter of only a white male (Protestant) getting elected or not, or more a matter of who ran. Lets be honest, Al Sharpton is far too divisive to win. Someone like Obak Barama (sp?) has an excellent chance. When he spoke at the DNC convention, he was amazing. I bet that by the the 2012 or 2016 election, he's the man. As for a woman, Hillary! I know I'm going to get totally slammed for that, but in all honesty, she gets a bum rap. She is very responsive, very focused and despite what the Right wing says, she is a very patriotic American. Just my opinion though.
Yeah, just look at that backwater the UK by Steelhamster on May 22, 2005 What are you talking about Steely? All of the PM's, except one, to my knowledge, have all been White, Anglo, Protestant males. Margaret Thatcher being the one exception. I may be wrong on that though. Am I? :)
is it because you do not like arnold that you don't want it done right now inter, or you just think it should be phased in?
Liberal_Democrat- What would you do if a Mexican came into the country and can barely speak English and is not familiar to American customs and he is elected into office by his own people who are now the majority in the country. What would you say to that? Would you want to leader of your country a foreigner?
Only if he was a 7 time Mr. Olympia.
^hmmm, how sweet :)
@RogueZealot it doesnt matter. if he love his people and the people of the united states then yes he can run for president. a man has brain to seek and learn. as long as he/she has the mind, the knowledge to make this a better country or should i say "world" then, yes he/she can run. it doesnt matter who you are or how you are structure. its just a matter of how you pour your heart, mind, body, and soul out to the people. what? are you going out and assasinated that person cus hes a foreigner? no! if you like what hes saying than the other man. then let him be.
when running for president, dont just read from the paper that a corrupt man had wrote you. speak from the heart, and mind. thats what count. talk about what you see, experience, about what you have been through. etc etc etc. not from a piece of paper. when a good man came from the ghetto, struggle through life to get to where hes at. that is when the united states will change for the better. why? because he seen it all. good, bad, poor, rich, how people are treated by those corruted politians. this will be the begining of a new era. and thats the truth!!
Larry the reason I would want an certain time period before allowing a foreign born to be president is because otherwise we would be changing the constitution to benefit an individual person. I have too much respect for the constitution to make a change for one person like Jennifer Granholm or Arnold Schwarsssesngblubber. And no I don't like Arnold Schwarengeszersits. We have four flat tires in Caleeeeefornia and he hasn't even located the spare. Needless to say I was against the recall. Rogue, I'll answer the question you posed to Liberal_Democrat. He was making an argument that didn't really have to do with your question. If you look at the history and the current demographics and take into account that Mexican-Americans for example wouldn't vote for someone who is neither literate in English or familiar with the traditions and customs of this great country,...then you don't have anything to worry about. If the person is to raise to any level of prominence they would definitely have to be able to communicate with the vast majority of the people. So, Rogue I would say that the chance of what you propose to be exactly zero.
I think the whole lot in Washington should be outsourced to China.
I did some research and during Nixon admin. this same topic came up, and the arguement came up that it would only be done because of Henny Kissenger. That was 30 years ago. I don't know how I feel about it actually, if you are American citizen, seems you should be eligible to all the rights any american has, including running for president.
Let me amend that. HELL, no! Although I've said that I'd love to have George Galloway as POTUS, it was said only in reference to the spirit he showed those morons on the Hill. We don't need this kind of amendment. Who knows WHAT such legislation might put in the White House? We crapped out on the LAST election as is.
I don't give a shit if Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to be president. I just can't support spending millions of dollars and having a time-consuming, resource-draining major debate in all 50 states just so he can run for president. Anyhow, he's starting to fade in Kali-forn-eee-a now, anyhow. If he wants to be president somewhere, let him go be president of Austria.
Yeah Cranky that is the point, you are thickheaded in your hatred.
are you serious? by Anonymous on May 23, 2005 im serious man. does a rich man know how it is being poor? no. does president bush know how it is being poor? no! he doesnt. if he was to go bankrupt. he probably hang himself. so anyone who had struggle through life to get to where they are at, should knows how it feels being down there. and you want them go get up there. what do you do? you would help them. imma wrong? im asian ok. and if i was the president of the united states. and i see a bum on the streets. hey heres a $100,000.00 or $1,000,000.00 check. buy a house, invest the money, ill tell him EVERYTHING he needs to know. so people think that foreigner cant be president. you guys got it all wrong when you guy were learning about predjudice, stereotype, discrimination, back in middle school and high school.
Icky at first I thought it was a language issue, but now I see that it is definitely an intelligence issue.
sorry about that. im just trying to make some of these ignorance people think more positive. thanks you for understanding.
wow!! all i see is hate in the country i lived in "america" is it because we learned it, and use it back in middle school and high school? for all nagetive thinker and positive thinker!!!!
^what the hell are you talking about man. Can you stop writing in slang and then maybe your points would become more salient.
inter_regnum are you alwase on your pms. got tampon?
icky I'm sorry but I don't speak monkey.!!!
wow! whats up with that anger. need anger mangement? what? tell me.
ps. if you dont understand it, then its your fault. you got mad so. that means that you dont understand. happy now!
icky I read that irritable from premenstrual time is lessened when one uses the plan b pill you ought to consider it. that is if you can muster enough hubris to not be a little punk bitch from the hoodrat.
No I wouldn’t support any changes to the constitution.
