THE PRESIDENT REFERS TO STEM CELLS AS "SNOWFLAKE BABIES." HAS HE COMPLETELY LOST HIS MIND?

I was just reading an article about the president's stated position of not allowing federal funding for research on embryonic stem cells. Nothing absurd or bizarre about the article--until Bush was cited as calling these cells "snowflake babies."

Is someone slipping LSD into his coffee? I mean OK, you're opposed to embryonic stem cell research, even when the majority of the country as well as the members of your own government are in favor of it--but "snowflake babies"? Is he working on a children's Christmas book?

Please address the snowflake baby issue before expanding on the topic. Thank you.

Yes, that's a very strange way to refer to embryonic stem cells
No, I can see where he's coming from with the snowflake babies
I have another opinion (comment)

COMMENTS:
This situation is hypocritical. Either ban stem cell research completely, or fund it completely. The government needs to stop the hair splitting and decide which way this nation should go. It is laughable that the government won't fund stem cell research, yet collects tax revenues from private companies that do. My view is like this; if the U.S. government denies funding for embryonic stem cell research. Private companies in the U.S. have no prohibition against doing embryonic stem cell research. If this research is ethically and morally wrong, why is the government limiting their objections to a ban on government funding and not a total outright ban? My point regarding tax revenue is that the private companies engaging in stem cell research supply revenue to the government. The government gets funding from companies doing embryonic stem cell research, but denies funding public research into embryonic stem cells. It sounds like a double standard to me.

The fact that Australia, Canada, France, and Norway all ban human cloning make it less bizarre. It is possible that the president is trying to grab the attention of the people. There is a very clever manipulation of words coming from the side that support embryonic stem cell research. I think that Uncle Randy's choices are a false dichotomy. The issue with embryonic stem cell research is that it's supporters' rhetoric offer pie in the sky predictions about whether or not it will be successful. There have only been negative results out of embryonic stem cell research.

If embryonic stem cell research is so promising then why is there an absolute dirge of private finacing? It is because there have been no cases in which the supporters rhetoric match the real results. To date embryonic stem cell research has only caused cancer.

It doesn't have to be you are for all stem cell research or you are not. That is not the case. Adult stem cell research has already yielded promising results as has umbilical stem cell research and not coincidentally there is a boatload of private investment in those two areas. Yet those who are backing ESCR are simply playing a word game and playing on emotions. I don't care how many appeals Michael J. Fox, Christopher Reeves or any other person makes. When you see the private money involved you can know one thing for sure: THAT THERE IS PROMISE FOR PROFIT.

So the president may simply be trying to find an angle that works to capture the imagination of the people.

I_R, I hadn't heard about a dearth of private financing - in fact, I heard quite the opposite.

Snowflake babies sounds like part of a bad poem in a cheesy Hallmark card. Appealing to the lowest common denominator of the American public.

I have no problem with stem-cell research. It will benefit us.

He's just playing to the red-sweater crowd when he says "snowflake babies". The goal of stem cell research is to help people who are suffering.

How can you think that a stupid bunch of microscopic stem cells is the same thing as a fully formed human, living life? Give me the cells, and I'd gladly smash them with a tack hammer if that somehow means it might improve someone's quality of life. Where's the compassion?

Here's what's going to happen. People are going to continue to research the potential benefits of stem cells. The U.S. government can either get onboard, or keep yapping about snowflake babies. You're either with us, or you're with the terrorists.
