IS AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL UNAMERICAN?

[+] ballot by mojo
created Tue May 31, 05

On the network news the other night, I learned that Amnesty International is the latest group to be branded 'Unamerican' by the Bush Administration for its criticism of the Americans' treatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay.

Speaking at the release of Amnesty's annual report, William Schulz, head of the U.S. chapter of Amnesty International said Wednesday, charged that Washington has become ''a leading purveyor and practitioner'' of torture and ill-treatment and that senior officials should face prosecution by other governments for violations of the Geneva Conventions and the U.N. Convention Against Torture. "If the administration of President George W. Bush fails to conduct a truly independent investigation of U.S. abuses against detainees in Iraq and elsewhere, foreign governments should investigate and prosecute those senior officials who bear responsibility for them," said Schulz.

Among those officials, Schulz named Bush, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Undersecretary of Defence for Policy Douglas Feith, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director George Tenet, and senior officers at U.S. detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Abu Ghraib, Iraq.

''It is the height of hypocrisy for the U.S. government itself to use the very torture techniques that it routinely condemns in other countries,'' he said. ''When the U.S. government then calls upon foreign leaders to bring to justice those who commit or authorise human rights violations in their own countries, why should those foreign leaders listen?''

The government of the U.S. has relied on reports from Amnesty International to determine injustice and torture taking place in foreign countries - including Iraq, under Saddam Hussein. Now that the spotlight is on us, however, the Republicans accuse Amnesty International of being Unamerican. Does that make sense?

Yes, makes perfect sense. Do as we say, not as we do.
No, it's the height of hypocracy - and yet another example of 'shooting the messenger'.

COMMENTS:
Amnesty International got criticized by Dick Cheney. That should convince everyone that Amnesty International is correct about it's allegations of torture and abuse. AI is a very brave organization that has stood up for people who have had their human rights taken away all over the world. They are great in my opinion.

I've seen reports where amnesty international has crit things usa has done for decades, they see what they perceive is wrong and they report, death penalty being one example, I don't think the USA should be exempt from criticism if they do wrong.

Dictator Bush and Puppet Master Cheney are unamerican. Amnesty International is a great organization, one of which I'm proud to be a member.

Hey Rouge Zealot i guess you can add Amnesty international to your dislike now along with UN and the WTO, still being that you are RRW/I_S that doesnt surprise me.

Someone who is liberal is un-american. Whoever is a big enough ass to say something like that is really the un-american one.

They appear to have been quite serious when they warned "You're either with us or against us."

Amnesty International are one of the few surviving organizations left which has conscience enough to report the bald facts. Whether or not one wants to consider those facts depends on the particular biases of the individual, but facts are facts.

All that I can say about this- can anyone name a prison within the United States that is open to the elements, and the prisoners are subject to "interrogation" 24/7? And they wonder why the insurgents are after us with such a vengeance.
by Truthseeker013 on Tue May 31, 05 3:27pm [+]

I would very much like to see an independent investigation in these matters. I mean, why wouldn't you want an independent investigation if you have nothing to hide..?

And if criticizing the government for policies and actions I feel are unwise, misguided, or even harmful to the welfare of the United States makes me un-American, then I'm un-American.

^(I'll also add morally reprehensible to that list)

-And one more thing: if you can't attack the message, then attack the messenger. It's the oldest trick in the book--just like going off on tangeants that relieve you of the responsibility of addressing the issue head-on.
