The people of Europe will benefit if a united Europe cuts barriers to trade and communications.

I can't imagine why modern Europe would scare anyone.

cranky

every dictator from Ceaser to Napoleon to Hitler has dreamed of controlling all of Europe...why make it easier for the next one?

by JohnnyReb on Thu Jun 02, 05 12:09pm [+]

thats why it scares some people
by JohnnyReb on Thu Jun 02, 05 12:15pm [+]

It'll never happen. Those countries can never agree on anything.
by _Beelzebubba on Thu Jun 02, 05 12:25pm [+]

No. Every "European" country for itself
by xxxxxxxx on Thu Jun 02, 05 12:50pm [+]

I think JonnyReb hit the nail on the head really. Just look at the past of some of these countries (Germany = yikes!) It seems like too much power in too few hands , never a good thing.
by everygirl on Thu Jun 02, 05 1:15pm [+]

I would agree that too much power in too few hands is never a good thing. Which is why I'm against the Bush Administration's efforts to eliminate our democratic checks and balances and centralize power in the presidency (just like Putin, in Russia).

Democracy, when working, actually can prevent a concentration of power into the hands of those who love dictatorship (like Bush and Putin).

The Europeans could look at Bush and think that it would be better for them if the US was broken into regional nations. What nation is the world's number one bully right now?

Also, every nation that isn't a free market democracy is subject to abuse of power. Europe is mostly democratic these days. Why presume that, in the long term, they have a bigger potential to engage in warfare and oppression than the US? The US is the one spending half of the worlds defense budget, and it's also the one with the "might makes right" and its the only Western nation that has recently invaded another country--not in self-defense.
by cranky on Thu Jun 02, 05 1:25pm [+]

First off of course I disagree with the idea that we are a bully because we stepped in to stop saddam's abuses, but aside from that, just the sheer size of Europe... along with their history... just imagine if a stalin or a hitler came climbed to the top of the power structure of a "united" Europe.... scary thought.

It's evil I tell you! Evil!!!

Actually it scare the living shit out of the nationalist me, but the realistic and "I hate livin in Balkans" me, thinks is a good idea. I'm a schysoid. Or something like that.
by johan_moritz on Thu Jun 02, 05 2:53pm [+]

Can today's Europe if united be any more imperialistic than the United States? I think that would be very difficult.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Thu Jun 02, 05 3:12pm [+]

I doubt it will ever happen. But if it does I wouldn't worry. Granted if this had been suggested 60 years ago I would be a little concerned, but europe has had it's teeth pulled lately. It's like worrying about a gang of quadrapalegic 80 year olds, it doesn't really matter if they used to be the toughest guys on the block, now they're helpless. They're weak as individuals, they're weak as a group. Let europe be one united nation, before they get overrun by the muslims.
by herzog on Thu Jun 02, 05 5:40pm [+]

I don't like the idea of a United States of America

It's easier to lose your freedoms to a bloated bureaucracy. Government should be as local as possible.
by thc2883 on Thu Jun 02, 05 8:22pm [+]

I don't think it will happen the reason being there are so many countries with so many different cultures. Now that might not sound like a huge reason but just the difference in culture and language along with pride for their own independent country will make the UE a weak alliance at best. We know the UK is not going to give up the pound easily and I have talked to people from countries like Holland that whole heartedly hate the idea of the Euro let alone one controlling government for all of Europe.
by 1FootOutTheDoor on Thu Jun 02, 05 9:13pm [+]

Yes, considering that two world wars started there.

I like the idea of a multi-polar world that Jacks Chiraq is always talking about.
