IN TERMS OF I.Q., ARE CONSERVATIVES OR LIBERALS MORE INTELLIGENT?

[+] ballot by xxxxxxxx
created Sat Jun 04, 05

The author knows of no research or data that attempts to answer this question. He does note that areas around virtually all institutions of "higher education" are considered "liberal" territory.

At the same time, it is noted that many conservatives are bright, and more than a few have achieved the highest levels of human endeavor.

So, what's your take on this? Is there a connection between intelligence quotient and political position?

Welcome your votes and comments.

Yes, and conservatives are smarter.
Yes, and liberals are smarter.
There is no connection.
Who cares, eh?
This idiot in office 8yrs should give u the answer
Conservatives have conservative IQ's and liberals have liberal IQ's. It so obvious

COMMENTS:
Most of those young college liberals become more conservative as they get older and wiser.

^Don't know about "wiser," Reb. Perhaps they just start accumulating capital and become increasingly unwilling to part with it. #:>)

It may be like a poker game: The winners want to take their money and go home, and the losers want another deal.

The reason that there are more liberals in the university is becuase of two things 1. you don't have to compete, you get tenure and thats it. That is why you get such giants as Ward Churchill. 2. They can't make it in the real world. The theoretic world is all they are able to handle.

The current crop of professors coming up is even more leftist than the old crop becuase they have never had their assumptions and worldview challenged. If you want to see this: go to a lecture and dispute global warming, the right to choice, or Darwinian theories. No matter how compelling your argument, nor how well you articulate it, in most cases you will be shouted down. In the other cases you will be ostracized. Or you will be called crazy, a "rightwing nutjob", racist, sexist, homophobe etc.

Not much different than on this site really.

It's not only the unwillingness to part with capital, griffon, it's also the realization that, as you take responsibility for your own actions, you expect others to do the same. When you are in your youth, you are more apt to believe the ridiculous theories of ultra liberal college professors who live in complete isolation of what the real world is like, with tenured jobs, who don't have the slightest idea of how the 'real world' works due to an inability to understand, because of cultural ignorance. As the realization sets in, that you can't save everyone, that in most cases, the people don't WANT to be saved, that you begin taking care of your own instead.

Interesting insight, Jappy. Seems to me that this is definitely a piece of the puzzle.

Question: How does this account for people who remain liberal, and for so many wealthy folks who profess to be liberal? Is it guilt or intelligence, both, or neither?
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Jun 05, 05 12:22am [+]

To reiterate, folks, this ballot does not ask you to defend or attack any position. It asks only if you think one group is brighter than another, and why that might be.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Jun 05, 05 12:25am [+]

Not being either, or even American for that matter, I'd say this was a stupid question! You Americans seem to hate each other based on your political beliefs. I just don't understand it. griffon007, I'm not singling you out on this, it's just an observation.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Jun 05, 05 12:32am [+]

Is it possible that one or the other could be brighter, just cos they support a particular party? mmm! I think you may know the answer to that.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Jun 05, 05 12:35am [+]

Actually, Internal, I don't know the answer. My guess would be an even distribution across parties. Certainly, academia is more liberal, perhaps because of some of the reasons cited here: Disconnected from the workaday world, not holding "real jobs," etc. And you could argue that I.Q. is theoretical intelligence, and functional intelligence (what you do with your I.Q,) is more important. In my experience, folks who possess high theoretical intelligence are generally more idealistic than others, but also less functional in "real life."

Sorry you considered this a stupid question. If I had asked such a question, would it mean I was more or less likely to be a conservative, or liberal?

Enjoyed your comment.

Lol, Griffon, no offence mate, as I said it was nothing personal. I was actually surpised that you asked the question. Maybe I'm missing something
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Jun 05, 05 1:02am [+]

'surprised':o)
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Jun 05, 05 1:04am [+]

No, there's no connection between the two. Just different morals. Well, one has morals and one doesn't.
by Liberal_Democrat on Sun Jun 05, 05 1:20am [+]

I've met smart people of both persuasions, and stupid ones as well. Intelligence, or the lack thereof, isn't limited by political affiliation, no matter what some in this post may try to ascribe.
by Truthseeker013 on Sun Jun 05, 05 11:31am [+]

On average it's probably about the same. Now when it comes to common sense republicans seem to be ahead.
by herzog on Sun Jun 05, 05 1:54pm [+]

Conservatives seem to be ahead on racism, too.
by cranky on Sun Jun 05, 05 3:42pm [+]

Real liberals (libertarians) are smarter. The most commonly held political beliefs in high-IQ societies are classical liberal aka LEAVE ME THE F__K ALONE. In America paleoconservatism is very close to libertarianism but most conservatives no longer fit this definition.
by thc2883 on Sun Jun 05, 05 8:11pm [+]

cranky, i know just as many racist liberals as i do conservatives. The blacks at my college are extremely racist. Strange,, almost all of them are liberal. I hate when liberals pull out the racist card to describe conservatives because it goes both ways. If a black guy says something racist there is nothing wrong with it, but the minute a white guy does it's soo horrible. As far as this intelligence factor goes, I would say there is no relation between political preferences and intelligence.
by RawIron on Mon Jun 06, 05 3:12pm [+]

And what more would you expect from a child born into welfare in a city with schools that weren't funded and parents who couldn't care for him?
All the stupid hate you boys feel for what you can't begin to understand or change is pathetic.

Oh but it's better not to change it eh, it helps to have someone to look down on their whole lives?

You're the smartest.. the wisest.. oh I am awed by the size of your heart and your brain.
