I think it's just another way of Americans saying that they're basically at the top of the world in all categories. Which isn't at all true since they've haven't won a Basketball Gold in either the olympics or the actual World Basketball Championship in ages. I'm sure they do the same thing for their national soccer league which is REALLY sad.
True enough, Kaiser. Many our top NBA players chose not to play in the Olympics. If just Shaquile O'Neal had played, we'd have won it. But, despite the fact that these weren't truly America's best, we didn't win. And the NBA is not an olympic playground - It is the best basketball on the planet. Ask any of your European basketball players, they will tell you who's better. Not that I give a flying fried tomato. NBA players are the best in the world, but most of them are jerks. Quit following the professional basketball several years ago. "Oh where have you gone, Michael Jordan..." And, no, Kaiser we aren't at the top in everything in the world. Just most things. And the ones we don't top, we just create the freedom for them to enjoy.
And "stupid" is when someone presumes to potificate on a sport about which they apparently know little or nothing. And wih reference to the "actual World Basketball Championship being the "true champs of the world," I doubt you could get a dozen of this league to even say that they are better than the NBA. An all-star team from Europe couln't defeat a single NBA team. Nor could our all-star team defeat a single top-level team in Europe.
Hey moron, the U.S. went as far as England did in the last World Cup (quarter finals). Soccer is the only little girls activity that tries (without success) to force Americans into liking it. Soccer appeals to the below average athletic male (meaning the average european or south american) in the U.S. GIRLS play soccer and the weak boys who couldn't make the cut in a game where height, size and speed count, where you need your entire body to play and over protective mothers who don't want their kid to get hurt let them play . And to watch it is like watching paint dry almost all the games end in a 0-0 tie BORING!
Who cares? Insecure idiots. I don't much care for basketball but I'm willing to bet you money that the NBA championship team could pimp any non-American basketball team in the world. Our second tier guys can medal in the olympics, our first tier would mop the floor with the opposition. But they're probably called that because when the first NBA championship was played there were no other nations with serious leagues.
Anytime the champion of an American sport are declared "World Champions", I chuckle. Last time I looked, the competition that decided who was best in the world in a given sport was called the Olympics.
^that is true. But there is the matter of the fact that basketball is a primarily American creation. Created here, popularized here, and the majority of the best players are here.
The term World Champions is used because at the time of the FIRST basketball championship series, there WERE NO OTHER BASKETBALL LEAGUES IN THE WORLD! Funny how people never figure this out.
Well I guess we should call the Miss Universe pagent the Miss Earth pagent. We're not being fair to all the aliens out there.
