By who? "Preserved" Smith? A jam, jelly? What?

Silliness aside, of course patriotism is the impetus for most wars of aggression. However, defensive wars in response to aggression cannot be said to be motivated by patriotism.

Back to "Preserved," is that for real?

HENRY PRESERVED SMITH American Biblical scholar, was born in Troy, Ohio, on the 23rd of October 1847 He graduated at Amherst College in 1869 and studied theology in Lane Theological Seminary in 1860-1872, in Berlin in 1872-1874 and in Leipzig in 1876-1877. He was instructor in church history in 1874-1875, and in Hebrew in 1875-1876, and was assistant-professor in 1877-1879 and professor in 1879-1893. In 1892 he was tried for heresy by the Presbytery of Cincinnati, was found guilty of teaching (in a pamphlet entitled Biblical Scholarship and Inspiration, 1891) that there were "errors of historic fact," suppressions of "historic truths," &c. in the books of Chronicles, and that the " inspiration of the Holy Scriptures is consistent with the unprofitableness of portions of the sacred writings." He was suspended from the ministry. Dr Smith retired from the denomination, and in 1893, upon becoming a professor at Andover Theological Seminary, entered the ministry of the Congregational Church. He became a professor in Amherst College, and in 1907 became a Professor in the Meadville (Pennsylvania) Theological School. He published The Bible and Islam (1897), and Commentary on the Books of Samuel (1903, in the "International Theologica Library").

No, maybe back in the ancient times or during Khan's time that seemed to be all ego , but today's wars are usually based on helping out the victims of tyrants.

Yes. It has just become fashionable, these days, to put a more acceptable facade on it.

The 'CLASH OF NATIONAL EGOTISMS SANCTIFIED BY THE NAME OF PATRIOTISM' factor I would agree is the ultimate cause ... but the reason for the clashes I think can be broken down further into one of three things, either real OR perceived

1) Basic Greed
2) Ignorance
3) Lack of Compassion

I had much more explanation typed up but reading through, it bored the hell out of me, I got rid of it!

If today's wars are based on helping the victims of tyrants, who will help the people of Iraq?
by cranky on Mon Jun 13, 05 4:29pm [+]

Oh, yes.

Most wars are started for other reasons. Patriotism is just a word used by people who START wars to disguise the real reasons or convince people to fight.

I don't know - religious idealism and the desire to impose it on one's neighbors has led to more than a few bloody conflicts.
